Police Jury to review COVID sick leave

As of September 30, the current COVID sick leave policy for employees of the Evangeline Parish Police Jury will expire. As a result, the jury debated a direction to take going forward during its meeting held Monday, September 13.

The Evangeline Parish School District heard from Chief Financial Officer Amy Lafleur regarding changes to the district’s general liability insurance during the board’s meeting held September 1. She stated the cyber insurance is no longer free, which accounts for the majority of the cost increase.

Death of a statesman

One of Evangeline Parish’s elder statesmen, who served as state senator and as a judge on the Third Circuit Court of Appeal, passed away on Monday, September 13, at the age of 78. At the time of his death, John Saunders was near the end of his third term on the appellate court.

New animal control facility is discussed

The Ville Platte City Council heard from dog pound volunteer Melissa Gibson at the council’s September 14 meeting. Gibson was accompanied by local architect and animal rescuer Jill Stevens and animal control supervisor Aaron Baughman. Gibson said the pound is in dire need of repairs.
