Ville Platte High Schools hosts First Annual Academic Signing Day

On Friday, May 10, Ville Platte High School hosted its first annual academic signing day for graduating seniors to celebrate their accomplishments and commitment to continuing their education. JAG Specialist Dianna Johnson served as mistress of ceremonies, while Jeremiah Gallow gave the invocation.

Boggy Bayou Festival opens

The 39th annual Boggy Bayou Festival kicked off on Thursday, May 9, with its opening ceremonies. In the top photo, Miss Boggy Festival Kale Cloud (right) is pictured as she places the crown on this year’s king, Bryon Scott Johnson (center). Also pictured is outgoing king, Kerry Paul Fontenot.

Torch is carried

National Day of Prayer is observed

The Town of Mamou took part in the National Day of Prayer with a special service held Thursday, May 2, at the Mamou Recreational Center.

DAV names officers

The Disabled American Veterans Chapter 41 of Ville Platte named its new officers at a meeting held Thursday, April 11, at the Veterans Home. Pictured from left are John Ortego, commander; J. D.

Large cabbage is produced

Jerry Ardoin, of Ville Platte, is all smiles as he shows off his 9.5-pound head of cabbage. Any other resident of the parish who grows such produce is encouraged to submit a photo to the Ville Platte Gazette or drop by the office located at 200 Court Street in Ville Platte to show off what is grown.

EP Library celebrates Earth Day

On Monday, April 22, the Evangeline Parish Library hosted an Earth Day celebration and held a ribbon cutting for the brand new see library. Two free packs of seeds can be checked out by patrons each day with their library card.

Foreman receives Volunteer of the Year recognition

Mable Foreman was the first recipient of the Hillery Hill Volunteer of the Year Award presented during the Heritage Manor Volunteer Banquet held Thursday, April 18. The award was renamed in honor of longtime volunteer Hillery Hill, who passed away earlier this month.

Work begins on La. Hwy 106

Work has begun on an $8.5 million dollar project on La. 106 from La. 10 to La. 13 (between Beaver and Pine Prairie). This project consists of milling asphaltic concrete, in-place base rehab, patching, asphalt overlay, rumble strips, and related work.

Teams place at Food Challenge

The Gourmet Girls of Sacred Heart (from left- Vivian Chapman, Anne Morein, Audrey Anne Pitre, and Audrey Caulkins) won the 4-H Food Challenge and placed first in the 4th-6th grade division on April 3. The Gourmet Gals of Bayou Chicot Elementary placed third in the 7th-8th grade division.
