EPSO Arrests

The Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office reported the following recent bookings into the parish jail. Arrested were the following persons: • Phillip Freeman, 32, Ville Platte, was arrested on June 1, 2021, by the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office for possession of CDS Schedule I, possession of CDS Schedule II, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Gazette places second for general excellence in LPA competition

The Ville Platte Gazette notched a second place finish for general excellence in the 2020 Louisiana Press Association Better Newspaper Competition. The category of general excellence judges two issues as one entry and has the following criteria: overall creativity, layout and design as well as reader appeal, news quality and editorial page. Special consideration will be given to the overall variety of ads and advertisers, classified page/section and how public notices are handled by the publication.

Volunteers to be spotlighted

The past year has been a huge change for the community because of the pandemic. Many businesses have suffered but have also fought to come back stronger.

Painting it forward

“I’m glad the rain held off,” said Thaddaeus Arvie on Wednesday as he added more paint to his Martin Luther King, Jr. Center mural. Shades of purple highlight the portrait of the civil rights icon. On one level, Thaddaeus has been working on the outward appearance of the building and the park next to it, but on a deeper level, he is working on bringing something special to the community.

Telehealth options are discussed

The Evangeline Parish School Board discussed the future of campus healthcare, recognized state champion wrestlers, and received an update about the mask policy at their June 2 meeting. Special Education Director Kelli Lafleur introduced Chelsea Mayeaux, certified rural health clinic expert, and Taylor Cattano, CEO of Southern EVALS, who presented information in hopes of bringing telehealth to staff and students in Evangeline Parish.

Paul stops gain-of-function research funding in China

This week the U.S. Senate passed Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-Ky.) amendment that would permanently ban all funding of gain-of-function research in China. This is following much backand-forth with Dr. Fauci, and continually defending against the use of American taxpayer dollars in funding gain-of-function research, which aims to enhance the infectiousness or severity of a virus. The amendment is cosponsored by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS), Sen. Mike Braun (R-IN), and Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC).

The Marks Post: Sports writers on vacation

We sports writers do not get much time off for vacations. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy what I do because being a sports writer has its perks. For example, I got to cover state championship events in Natchitoches, Lake Charles, Hammond, and Sulphur this past year. Also, I get what I call working vacations like when I covered LSU in the Peach Bowl and the National Championship two years ago and at Texas A&M last year.

Has prosecutorial misconduct become an epidemic in Louisiana? A number of national publications seem to think so. Nary a week goes by when there is not a story of some Louisiana prosecutor supposedly pursuing justice by breaking the law.

Students are named to LSUE Chancellor’s List

EUNICE - LSU at Eunice has named 339 students to the Spring Semester 2021 Chancellor's List in recognition of their academic achievement. The list comprises full-time students who maintained at least a 3.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale during the semester.
