VILLE PLATTE - You can go to a baseball (or, in this case, a softball game) every day and witness something out of the ordinary. It may even be something you have never seen before. That was the case Monday with Sacred Heart softball’s game against Fairview as the Lady Trojans won 4-2 on a walk-off inside the park grand slam.
Fairview jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as leadoff hitter Rylee Jinks scored on a Courtlyn Martin groundout to the Sacred Heart pitcher Jodi Vidrine.
Sacred Heart had traffic on the bases in the bottom of the inning but Fairview starting pitcher Andi Stanley was able to coax a groundball off the bat of Catherine Larson to retire the side and strand a pair of baserunners.
An inning later, Taylor Darbonne walked to lead off the frame. She promptly stole second base and advanced to third on a bunt. Darbonne, however, was thrown out at the plate as she was trying to score on a Halle Lafleur groundout to Cloud at shortstop. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the visiting Lady Panthers.
Rylee Cloud led off the fourth with a home run that cleared the wall in near straight away center field to give Fairview a 2-0 lead.
Sacred Heart had trouble brewing with two outs in the bottom of the inning as Jacelyn Pitre reached base on a double. Jodi Vidrine then walked, but a fielder’s choice to Jinks at third base ended the inning.
The Lady Trojans were poised to strike again in the bottom of the sixth inning as Elizabeth McDaniel doubled to lead off the frame. Larson then grounded out on a fielder’s choice to shortstop that retired McDaniel at third base. A passed ball caused Larson to move up to second base, and she was stranded there as Pitre flew out to Jinks.
In the top of the seventh, Fairview was retired in order as the Lady Panthers clung to a 2-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the inning, Malee Stanley took the ball in the circle in relief of Stanley. Jodie Landry then led off the frame by reaching base on an error. Lafleur then singled to move Landry to third base.
With runners on the corners and nobody out, Lafleur stole second base ahead of a Maci Vidrine single to load the bases.
Jenna McFarlain popped up to Ella Reeves at second base for the first out of the inning. The next batter, Ava Johnson, launched a fly ball to right field that was mishandled by Claire Landry and proved to be the deciding factor in the game.
For Fairview, Jinks and Cloud each went 1-for-3 at the plate, and Cloud and Martin each had a run batted in. Andi Stanley gave up four hits and walked four in 6 innings of work.
For Sacred Heart, Johnson went 1-for-4 at the plate with four runs batted in and a run scored. Vidrine pitched a complete game giving up two runs on two hits while striking out six Lady Panther batters.
