VILLE PLATTE – Despite leading by two at the half, the Ville Platte Lady Bulldogs failed in their attempt to hold off the Avoyelles Charter Lady Vikings in a 50-40 loss this past Friday night.
With the loss, Ville Platte dropped to 6-5 on the year. The Lady Bulldogs are set to take on the Northwest Lady Raiders in a district 5-3A contest tomorrow night.
Avoyelles jumped out quickly, scoring the first four points of the game. Ville Platte picked up their first basket of the night when Shayla Hickerson knocked down a turn-around jumper in the lane.
Over the next 3:50, the Lady Vikings asserted themselves on both sides of the floor enough to own a 9-3 lead. However, the tenacity of the Lady Bulldogs would not allow Avoyelles to completely run away with the first quarter of play.
Beginning at the 2:48 mark, Ville Platte slowly inched their way back into the game. With six seconds to go in the period, Kaydan Coward knocked down a basket that brought the Lady Bulldogs within two points, 14-12. That score stood until the buzzer sounded to end the quarter.
With momentum slowly seeping into the veins of their players, Ville Platte began the second quarter on a 5-0 run.
Unfortunately, the Lady Vikings did not flinch, scoring the next seven points to take a two point lead.
With 2:23 left to go in the first half, Janiya Fontenot hit a two-point basket that started a chain reaction in the Lady Bulldogs’ favor. After that shot went down, Ville Platte picked up five of the next seven points to earn a 25-23 lead as the teams headed into the locker room.
The third quarter began with the Lady Bulldogs continuing to put pressure on Avoyelles, as Ville Platte scored the first three points of the period. Avoyelles responded with four points of their own to cut the Lady Bulldogs’ lead to one. Ville Platte responded by opening the advantage back up to five, 32-27, with a basket by Vondryua Wilson with 3:40 showing on the clock.
The Lady Vikings did not allow the slight Lady Bulldog lead stop them from re-gaining the momentum that seemed to have slipped away. Over the final two minutes of the third quarter and the beginning 1:30 of the final period, Avoyelles went on a 13-0 run that put them up by eight points.
The rest of the fourth period was about Ville Platte and their struggle to get back into the game. Regrettably for the Lady Bulldogs, the Lady Vikings were up to the task and held off any rally Ville Platte could muster.
Trinity Leday led the Lady Bulldogs with 11 points.
