It wasn’t always picturesque. But when pitching isn’t allowing base hits, it doesn’t really matter if it’s pretty or not.
That’s exactly what happened Saturday afternoon in Sacred Heart’s 4-1 home win over Eunice, when the Trojans (9-6) overcame four fielding errors behind the brilliance of starting pitcher Gabe Fontenot.
Gabe Fontenot went the distance and allowed only two hits and one earned run against a potentially potent Eunice lineup. Ten of his 21 outs were ground ball outs in his complete game, and the senior showed a knack for keeping the Bobcats off-balance all afternoon.
“He’s a really good pitcher and was locating three pitches for strikes,” Sacred Heart head coach Gary Ashworth said. “He did a good job of getting us out of innings. I think one of his innings was a five-pitch inning.”
Fontenot scrambled through 30 pitches in the first two innings, but began to find his groove in the third inning, when the Trojans put up the only crooked number on the scoreboard. That three-run third provided more than enough cushion for Fontenot.
After the Bobcats scratched across a run in the top of the third, left fielder Noah Soileau led the bottom of the frame off by reaching on an error, was sacrifice bunted over to second base before being picked up an RBI-double by third baseman Hayden Fontneot to tie the game 1-1.
Gabe Fontenot walked to plate Gabe Wilmouth and give Sacred Heart the lead, with Issac Leger adding an RBI-single to bring Hayden Fontenot across and extend the lead to 3-1.
“There was some really good baserunning and heads up play (in the three-run inning),” Ashworth said.
From there, Gabe Fontenot cruised, keeping the ball in play for the Trojans and forcing the Bobcats into two double plays in the final four innings.
“Gabe made some big pitches and some big plays for us today,” Ashworth said.
The Trojans added a fifth-inning run on another Bobcat error.
Despite the early fielding issues, Ashworth saw the positive in his infield’s play and isn’t worried about the four-error day.
“We’re going to do what we do and get back to fundamentals. It comes down to routine plays. We made a lot of great plays but missed some easy ones early on. We’re just going to drill, drill, drill. We’ve got a good infield here.”
