The Sacred Heart Lady Trojans went scoreless in the second quarter, which in turn lead to their 45-23 loss to the Teurlings Lady Rebels in a non-district contest Thursday night.
With the loss, Sacred Heart falls to 1-2 on the year. The Lady Trojans are scheduled to host the Ascension Episcopal Lady Gators Tuesday night.
Against Teurlings, Sacred Heart moved out to a 2-0 lead on a basket from Jodie Landry just 18 seconds into the game. That lead did not last long, however, as the Lady Rebels ran off the next six points in a row.
Carley Cloud and Landry took turns knocking down the next two buckets to tie the game at 6-6 with 4:02 to go in the first quarter. Teurlings responded by collecting six of the final eight points in the period to take a 12-8 lead as the quarter came to a close.
Unfortunately, the two points scored by the Lady Trojans in the waning moments of the first quarter would be the last points scored in the first half. The heavy-handed Lady Rebel defense forced a number of miscues from Sacred Heart, allowing Teurlings to go on an 11-0 run in the second quarter.
By the time the two teams headed into the locker room, the Lady Rebels had opened up a 23-8 lead.
The Teurlings 15 point advantage expanded to 19 over the course of the initial two minutes of the third quarter. Sacred Heart’s Taylor Darbonne stopped the bleeding with a bucket at the 4:49 mark.
A Teurlings basket, sandwiched between four missed free throws gave the Lady Rebels a 29-10 lead with 3:13 to go in the period. Darbonne sank another basket 46 seconds later to cut back into the Teurling’s lead.
Nevertheless, the Lady Rebels were not done adding to their score in the period, as they notched another three points to own a 32-12 before the buzzer could sound to end the period.
The two teams basically matched each other point for point in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. A pair of Lady Trojan buckets mid-way through the period made it a 39-19 game.
But, Teurlings continued to pressure Sacred Heart down the stretch, adding to their already insurmountable lead. Sacred Heart scored the final four points of the game on a basket by Landry and a pair of free throws from Kali Shiver, but it was too little too late for the Lady Trojans.
