LAFAYETTE -- A valiant effort by Sacred Heart was not enough to overcome a first quarter deficit as the Teurlings Rebels held off the Trojans for a 43-36 win in a non-district contest Thursday night.
With the loss, Sacred Heart falls to 2-3 on the season. The Trojans are scheduled to take on Ascension Episcopal at home Tuesday night.
It was Sacred Heart that jumped out to the quick 2-0 lead on a basket by Breck Beaver. The Trojans expanded that lead following a pair of free throws from Teurlings when Beaver knocked down a three-point basket and Austin Darbonne pumped in another two points at the 5:38 mark of the opening period.
However, that five point lead quickly evaporated as the Rebels went on a 12-2 run over the next four minutes of play. Sacred Heart’s Bryce Deville hit the final bucket of the quarter with 48 seconds remaining on the clock to pull the Trojans within five, 14-9.
The two teams exchanged baskets over the first minute and a half of the second quarter. Sacred Heart had a chance to get even closer during that time frame, but missed on two one and one attempts.
A three-point basket by Ethan Karonika cut the Rebels’ lead down to four, 18-14, with 5:05 to go in the quarter. Once again, poor free throw shooting killed the Trojans’ chances of getting any closer as they missed three more from the charity stripe in the ensuing two minutes.
Teurlings outscored Sacred Heart over the final minutes of the half to give the Rebels a 23-17 lead heading into the locker room.
The Trojans came out in the third quarter and turned up the heat on the defensive side of the ball, forcing Tuerlings to turn the ball over and take some ill-advised shots. By the time the clock had wound down to the 2:37 mark, Sacred Heart had cut the Rebel lead down to four, 27-23.
Over the next two and a half minutes of play, Chase Tate and Deville connected on baskets to help the Trojans cut the Teurlings lead down to two points, 29-27, as the third period came to a close.
The Rebels collected back-to-back baskets to open the final quarter of play, which in turn expanded their lead to 33-27. Tate responded with a bucket of his own to cut the Teurlings advantage by two points.
A Rebel basket was followed by an exchange of free throws to put the game at 37-32 in favor of Teurlings. The Rebels hit a lay-up at the 2:32 mark of the period, but was answered just 15 seconds later when Deville sank a basket of his own.
The two clubs swapped buckets over the next 1:06 to give the Rebels a 41-36 lead. Sacred Heart tried to mount a comeback over the final minute of the game, but Teurlings was able to keep the ball in their possession for most of the remaining time and score a final basket to seal the game.
Deville led all Trojan scorers with 13 points, while Tate added 12 points of his own. Sacred Heart ended the night four for 13 at the line.
