Evangeline Parish basketball action was hot and heavy this past Friday and Monday nights, as several of the area’s teams took to the floor in hopes of picking up big wins and increasing their power rating before the playoffs begin in earnest next month.
Etching into the win column were two of those parish teams, the Sacred Heart Trojans and the Pine Prairie Lady Panthers. Meanwhile, both the Basile High hard court teams took hits, as well as the Ville Platte Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs.
Here is a rundown of those games played.
Sacred Heart
vs. St. Edmund
In one of the most exciting games of the season, the Sacred Heart Trojans grabbed a hard fought 68-64 overtime win over the St. Edmund Blue Jays on the road this past Friday night.
The win over St. Ed’s moves Sacred Heart to 8-9 on the season. The Trojans are scheduled to take on Catholic of Point Coupee on the road tomorrow night.
Bryce Deville pushed Sacred Heart out of the gates, scoring nine of Trojan’s 19 first quarter points to put the visiting team up 19-17 heading into the second quarter of play.
Sacred Heart cooled down on the offensive side of the floor in the second quarter, producing only 11 points, with most of that coming from Austin Darbonne who chipped seven points during that period. However, the Trojans were still able to take a 30-27 lead into the locker room as the quarter came to a close.
Sacred Heart continued to put pressure on the Blue Jays in the third quarter of play. By the time the horn sounded to end the period, the Trojans held a 46-37 advantage over St. Ed’s.
The fourth quarter was not kind to Sacred Heart at all. Despite a combined 14 points from Deville and Darbonne, the Blue Jays were able to out produce the Trojans 22-13 in the period, tying the game and sending it to overtime.
Sacred Heart made the best use of their trips to the free throw line in the extra frame, hitting on seven out of ten from the charity stripe, as they pulled away from St. Ed’s in the final minutes of the game.
Deville led all scorers with 26 points, while Darbonne added 17 points. Chase Tate chipped in 15 points for the Trojans in the win.
Pine Prairie
vs. Church Point
It took a fourth quarter surge, but the Pine Prairie Lady Panthers were able to overcome a 24-22 first half deficit to take down the Church Point Lady Panthers 41-35 in District 5-3A action this past Friday night.
With the win, Pine Prairie improves to 11-3 on the season and 2-0 in league play. The Lady Panthers are scheduled to travel to Mansura to take on Avoyelles Charter tonight, then host Mamou tomorrow night.
Pine Prairie got off to a very slow start offensively against Church Point, falling behind 17-9 after one quarter of play.
Kameron Allen lit a spark in the Lady Panthers in the second quarter, hitting two three point shots to help Pine Prairie close the gap to 24-22 as the teams headed into the locker room.
The third quarter was basically a wash, as the two teams showed dismal play on the offensive side of the floor by scoring only four points apiece.
However, in the fourth and final quarter, the Lady Panthers kicked it into a higher gear. With Brianna Wall shooting five out of ten from the charity stripe, Pine Prairie was able to outscore Church Point 15-7 to secure the win.
Wall had 14 points to lead the way for the Lady Panthers.
Ville Platte (G)
vs. Northwest
A two point deficit for Ville Platte went south quickly in the second quarter, as the Lady Bulldogs fell hard to the Northwest Lady Raiders 58-44 in a district contest Friday night.
The loss puts Ville Platte at 5-7 on the season and 0-2 in league play. The Lady Bulldogs are scheduled to take on the Iota Lady Bulldogs tomorrow night.
Trinity Leday’s seven points in the first quarter kept Ville Platte in the game, as they only trailed 12-10 when the quarter ended. Northwest turned up the volume in the second period, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 22-7 to take a 17 point advantage into the locker room.
Ville Platte got back on track in the third quarter behind Vandryua Wilson’s eight points. However, Northwest still came out on top with a three point edge, 15-12, in that period.
The Lady Bulldogs powered past the Lady Raiders 15-9 in the final quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the hole they were in.
Wilson scored 16 for Ville Paltte, while Leday added 11 points.
Ville Platte (B) vs.
Washington-Marion
The 24-6 advantage that Ville Platte gave Washington-Marion after the first quarter was just too much to overcome, as the Bulldogs fell 65-60 to the Chargin’ Indians this past Friday night.
With that loss, Ville Platte fell to 11-6 on the year. The Bulldogs are scheduled to battle Iota in a key District 5-3A match-up tomorrow night.
Ville Platte partially made up for the bad first quarter, outscoring Washington-Marion 24-16 in the second quarter and 17-9 in the ensuing period.
Nevertheless, the Charging Indians had enough in their gas tanks to outduel the Bulldogs 16-13 in the final period and hang on for the win.
Tauj Roy pumped in 15 points to lead Ville Platte, while Ernest Roberts and Montavius Seraille each chipped in 14 points for the Bulldogs.
Basile (G) vs. Oberlin
The Basile Lady Bearcats laid it all out on the line, but a bad third quarter did them in, as they fell 63-61 to the Oberlin Lady Tigers in a Monday night contest.
With the loss, Basile fell to 2-8 on the year and 1-4 in District 4-1A. The Lady Bearcats are scheduled to take on Hamilton Christian at home tomorrow night.
Basile jumped out to a 20-11 lead after the first quarter, but a shaky second quarter allowed Oberlin to cut the Lady Bearcat advantage down to one, 33-32, as the horn sounded to end the second period.
The Lady Tigers continued their momentum swing in the third quarter, outpacing Basile 17-13 to take control of the game. The Lady Bearcats were one point better, 15-14, in the final quarter, but it was too little too late, as Oberlin finished out the win.
Lainey Soileau collected 22 points to lead Basile, while Frida Alvarez pitched in 18 points in the loss.
Basile (B) vs. Oberlin
Playing with a limited number of players, the Basile Bearcats wound up being no match for the Oberlin Tigers, as they fell hard in a 74-30 loss.
Basile drops to 2-6 on the season and 1-5 in district competition. The Bearcats are scheduled to host Hamilton Christian tomorrow night.
It was all Oberlin from the jump ball, as the Tigers led 13-6 after one quarter of play and 33-8 by the end of the first half.
Oberlin cruised in the second half, out dueling Basile 20-10 in the third quarter and 21-12 in the final period.
