Parish teams see split dividends on the hard court

With Monday's 49-36 victory over parish rival Mamou, the Pine Prairie girls basketball team picked up their third win in the past four games.
Pine Prairie built up a five-point lead after the first quarter and kept that same margin heading into halftime, as both teams scored only nine points each in the second quarter of Monday's District 5-3A contest.
Pine Prairie distanced themselves in the third quarter as the Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Demons 17-5 in the period.
Mamou was unable to cut that 17-point lead down to single digits as Pine Prairie picked up the win and swept the season series.
Pine Prairie had three players score in double figures with Brashaylan Doucet leading the way with 13 points, while Kameron Allen added 11 and Asia George scored 10.
Mamou was led by Madison Markaysha Johnson added 12.

GIRLS
Merryville 75,
Basile 41;
Basile 72, Gueydan

The Basile girls basketball team suffered a lopsided defeat on Friday, but then bounced back by scoring a season-high in points in a victory.
Merryville put up a dominant first-quarter performance in Friday's 75-41 loss, outscoring Basile 38-6 in the opening period of the game.
Merryville's scoring frenzy slowed down the rest of the way, and Basile actually outscored them 27-23 in the final two quarters, but it wasn't enough.
Lainey Soileau led Basile with 19 points.
The following day, Basile would take on Gueydan in a rescheduled game from January 15th. The Bearcats would be the ones to put up the big number on the scoreboard defeating the Bears 72-38.
Basile set the tone by outscoring Gueydan 20-2 in the opening quarter and never looked back. The Bearcats had four players score in double figures with Frida Alvarez leading the way with 20 points. Soileau and Henley Lejeune each added 19 and Hanna Manuel scored 10.

BOYS
North Central 83,
Sacred Heart 51
Sacred Heart wrapped up last week with a lopsided District 5-1A loss to North Central.
The Hurricanes jumped out to a 26-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and the Trojans were unable to overcome that early deficit. North Central continued its relentless scoring by adding 22 and 24 points in the second and third quarters.
North Central was led by Derrick Tezeno's game-high 25 points while Reginald Strong added 15. Sacred Heart meanwhile was paced by Austin Darbonne who had 20 in the losing effort.

Iota 76, Mamou 45
Mamou played its first game since January 15th but the outcome didn't go the Demons way on Monday.
Iota jumped out to a 25-12 lead after the first quarter and then extended that lead up to 21 points by halftime. Mamou was unable to mount a comeback in the second half and ultimately fell by 31 points.
Iota was led by Andrew Thibodeaux and Kyle Guidry who each scored 15 points. Mamou was led by Collin Enicke who scored 14 points in the loss.
