MAMOU -- The Mamou Softball Demons got back on track with a victory in their final non-district tuneup before district play.
After dropping back-to-back games at the Acadiana Tournament over the weekend, Mamou defeated Opelousas Catholic 7-3 on Tuesday night to improve their overall record to 5-5.
Mamou will open up District 5-4A play at home this Thursday against Ville Platte High School. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
“We are very young and any playing time is good for their confidence,” said Mamou softball coach Kim Manuel who is in her 15th season at the helm of the Demons. “Hopefully this will carry over to Thursday’s game to start district.”
Mamou started off strong at the plate against OC by plating three runs in the bottom of the first.
Kylie Rider led off with a single to left field and Taylor Douget hit a double to left to give Mamou runners on third and second with no outs.
Mamou first baseman Tierane Thomas stepped into the batter’s box and took a pitch over the outfield wall for a three-run home run.
After stranding a few runners over the next few innings, Mamou got back on the board in the fifth. Chloe Moreau led off with a single and two batters later, Douget hit a two-run home run. Mamou would add two more runs in the sixth.
The Demons would have five players record at least two hits in the victory.
Manuel was pleased with the production but felt his team could have done a better job.
“They did a good job but we left too many runners on,” Manuel said.
Mamou’s Jennifer Fontenot meanwhile picked up the win after giving up three runs on six hits while striking out eight OC hitters in the game.
“Pitching did well tonight and the defense was solid,” Manuel said. “Hitting was good but we still need to capitalize when we have runners in scoring position.”
