LUTCHER -- It’s been a struggle most of the season for Mamou baseball, and its draw in the first round in the Class 3A playoffs did them no favors.
The No. 30-seeded Green Demons hit the road to play a favorite in Class 3A, No. 3-seed Lutcher. The Bulldogs showed why they are considered a favorite, beating Mamou 11-1 Monday night.
The Green Demons struggled at the plate, collecting only three hits, and Lutcher was able to get to starter Aubrey Martel early, collecting seven runs in the bottom of the second-inning to give itself plenty margin to work with.
Martel struggled through the inning, allowing free runners on that Lutcher was able to knock in.
However, given the circumstances, Martel was solid. He went five innings and struck out four Lutcher hitters while walking only one.
Mamou did struggle in the field, however. The Green Demons committed five errors, but did have a bright spot at the plate.
First baseman and three-hole hitter A.J. Arvie finished his recent hot streak on a strong note in this playoff game. He went 2-for-3 and drove in Mamou’s lone run of the game in the third inning, singling in Andre Tate.
