BATON ROUGE -- Despite the loss of a number of talented players to the draft, the LSU Tigers were still able to land eight players on the All-Southeastern Conference’s pre-season team.
Being named to the first team were cornerback Derek Stingley and safety JaCoby Stevens.
Stingley, a consensus first team All-American selection in 2019, had 38 tackles (one for loss), six interceptions and one pass breakup during his freshman season.
Stevens, the senior from Murfressboro, Tennessee, Finished second on the team in tackles with 92 and five sacks. The second team All-SEC player last year also picked off three passes.
Five Tigers were named second team. They are right tackle Austin Deculus, left guard Ed Ingram, wide receiver Terrace Marshall, kicker Cade York and Stingley, who was named to the team as an all-purpose player.
Picking up third team spots were true freshman tight end Arik Gilbert and defensive lineman Glen Logan.
Alabama placed a league-leading 11 representatives on the 2020 Preseason Coaches All-Southeastern Conference Football Team, it was announced on Thursday. Georgia was second with 10 representatives, while Florida, and Texas A&M each had eight.
This marks the 18th consecutive year of the SEC Coaches Preseason All-SEC Team. Ten schools had at least one First-Team All-SEC representative, including a conference-best eight from Alabama.
In other LSU sports notes the Tiger baseball team was forced to suspend fall practices because a number of players had to COVID-19 quarantine. The exact number of players that were forced to quarantine was not given.
“We’re following proper protocol,” LSU head baseball coach Paul Mainieri said. “The most important thing is the young men under our care.”
Players must quarantine for 10 days after a positive coronavirus test, according to Southeastern Conference protocols, and symptoms have to subside for at least 24 hours without medication before those players can return to practice.
