BASILE -- The Basile Lady Bearcats jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first quarter of play and never looked back as they blew past the South Cameron Lady Tarpons 58-24 in non-district action Thursday night.
The win, the first of the year for Basile, improves their overall record to 1-4. The Lady Bearcats are scheduled to travel to Lake Charles to face Hamilton Christian in a district contest on Tuesday.
Basile ramped up the pressure on both the offensive and defensive sides of the court to begin the game Thursday night. By creating a number of turnovers and taking the ball right at South Cameron’s defense, the Lady Bearcats opened up a 13-2 lead at the 1:36 mark of the first quarter.
The Lady Tarpons did not go away easily, scoring the next six points of the period. The last shot, a three-point basket made the score 13-8 as the horn closed out the opening quarter.
Another three-point basket by South Cameron, sandwiched between a Basile free throw and made bucket, gave the Lady Bearcats a 16-11 lead with 6:09 remaining in the second quarter.
Basile’s Henley Lejeune drained a three-point shot of her own that set off a scoring spree for the Lady Bearcats. Shayla Lavergne and Frida Alvarez each swished two baskets apiece and Lainey Soileau hit the front end of a one and one over the next three minutes to give Basile a 28-11 lead.
The Lady Tarpons managed to reach the free throw line twice in the last 1:28, making three of those shots from the charity stripe. As the teams headed into the locker room the Lady Bearcats held a 30-14 advantage.
South Cameron came out of the half time like a new team, scoring the first four points of the third quarter. However, Basile was having none of the momentum shift as the Lady Bearcats answered with a 13-0 run over the remaining 6:43 seconds of the quarter.
Basile picked up where they left off in the third period, ticking off nine points in a row to begin the fourth quarter of action. A South Cameron bucket at the 5:54 mark of the period stopped the Lady Tarpon slide.
Nevertheless, the Lady Bearcats were not finished adding to their lead. Basile countered the South Cameron basket with three of their own to take a 58-20 lead with 1:32 to go in the game.
The Lady Tarpons found a way to collect a couple of garbage baskets down the stretch to make the final score a little more respectful.
Soileau led all Lady Bearcats with 17 points, while Alvarez and Lejeune each chipped in 11 points in the win.
