It being Senior Day, Sacred Heart softball coach Todd Ardoin wanted his two seniors, Maci Vidrine and Jodi Vidrine, to have a special day.
It was the motivation behind giving Maci the start behind the plate, her preferred position, and Jodi the start in the circle.
It ended up more than special, with the Lady Trojans (14-8, 1-3) emerging victorious in District 5-1A play by blowing out Westminster 15-4 blowout in five innings behind the strength of an eight-run fourth inning to finish district play on a strong note.
It started with Maci, the team’s leadoff hitter. She has a strong showing, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored to set the tone for Sacred Heart. Jodi overcame early struggles to earn the win on Senior Day.
“I’m just happy for those two after having put all the work in the last four years,” Sacred Heart coach Todd Ardoin said. “Maci hasn’t caught much for us, and I gave her the opportunity to do it on Senior Day. She’s our catalyst. As she goes we go. Her going 3-for-4 was good for us.
“Jodi has been one of our go-to pitchers all year,” Ardoin added. “She settled down nicely after the second inning. We had an error-free game today, and that’s big for us. Just happy for them to have big days on Senior Day.”
Sacred Heart took advantage of sloppy Westminster fielding, using five errors to put up multi-run innings in every inning it scored: the first, third and fourth.
It especially clicked into place in the fourth inning, when a walk, error, and a fielder’s choice bunt by Maci Vidrine started the scoring in plating Jacelyn Pitre. Jodie Landry then singled to score Vidrine, followed by Elizabeth McDaniel singling in Landry and Ava Johnson scoring on a passed ball. Pitre’s two-RBI single was the final big blow of the frame.
“We executed the bunt well and put a couple balls in play (all day),” Ardoin said. “We put pressure on the defense and ran the bases well.”
