Pine Prairie softball wins district championship

PINE PRAIRIE -- With the roll the Pine Prairie girls have been on lately, it’s no surprise that they pulled out the District 5-3A championship with a 6-0 win over Church Point on Monday evening.
What’s maybe surprising is how they did it. Your lead-off batter is usually a speed merchant and relied upon to get on base.
Asia George did just that on Monday in collecting four hits, two of which went for four bases. However, she was also the team’s big run producer as well, driving in four runs.
Not a bad thing to have as you head into the playoffs. George singled in the first and third innings and saved her run producing for her final two at-bats. A fourth-inning, inside-the-park, three-run homer and a sixth-inning solo homer to centerfield gave the Lady Panthers (10-9, 6-1) more than they needed
Throw in a third-inning stolen base and solid defense and it was clear that, at least on this day, the world belonged to the Lyon Community College commit.
“She had a phenomenal game,” Pine Prairie head coach Alycia Hebert said. “It doesn’t surprise me because this kid is a natural-born competitor. She lays it all on the line and I never doubt her.”
George is piggy-backing off of another incredible performance, where she hit for the cycle last week.
“It’s just amazing to watch her play,” Hebert said.
For a program rich in softball history, they’ve won multiple state championships in the past, this district title is especially sweet for Hebert and the Lady Panthers.
“I could not be more proud of the girls for working hard, dealing with quarantine and adjusting to new posotions to find the best fit for the team,” Hebert said. “After a rough start, they really came together to have a run of really good games. They never say die and fought their way to our first goal of clinching district.”
