VILLE PLATTE -- For the second game in a row, the Ville Platte High Bulldogs were taken down by a Eunice based football team.
Just two weeks ago, Ville Platte was tripped up by Eunice High. On this Thursday night, the St. Ed’s Blue Jays took advantage of four Bulldog fumbles, as they strolled past Ville Platte 54-0 in a non-district contest.
Despite owning over 22 minutes of possession, the Bulldogs could only manage four total yards of offense, thanks in part to a stingy Blue Jay run defense that held Ville Platte to a minus 39 yards rushing.
The opening drive for the Bulldogs should have foretold the offensive struggles they would face the entire night. After receiving the kickoff to start the game, Ville Platte was forced to punt after losing six yards on their first drive.
St. Ed’s took over possession at their 38-yard line following the punt. Behind the running of Kieran Davis, the Blue Jays marched 61 yards in 11 plays, capping off the drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge from Davis. The extra point kick failed, but St. Ed’s owned the early 6-0 lead with 6:52 to go in the first quarter.
An exchange of possession occurred within the next three plays. Ville Platte fumbled the kickoff at their nine-yard line, where the Blue Jays recovered the ball. However, on the very first play from scrimmage, Davis returned the favor, coughing up the ball at the Ville Platte three-yard line where the Bulldog defense pounced on it for the recovery.
Unfortunately for Ville Platte, the ball fell on the turf during the initial play of their drive, where Blue Jay defender Easton Coleman scooped up the loose pigskin and took it in to the end zone from six yards out. The kick from Justin Landry was good, giving St. Ed’s a 13-0 lead with 5:13 remaining in the first quarter.
Ville Platte managed to sustain a viable drive on their next possession. Starting at the St. Ed’s 45-yard line following the kickoff return, the Bulldogs reached the Blue Jay 15-yard line in six plays, aided by a 54 yard pass from Devin Fontenot to RJ Wilson.
However, Ville Platte could not go any farther, as they turned the ball over on downs when a pass fell incomplete on fourth down and goal.
The two teams exchanged possessions as the second quarter began. St. Ed’s got the ball back at their 35-yard line with 5:52 to go in the first half.
The running trio of Henry Brown, Taylor Daire and Davis brought the ball to the Bulldog one-yard line in four plays, where Brown dove into the end zone for the third touchdown of the night for St. Ed’s. Landry was true on the point after kick and the Blue Jays now led 20-0 with 4:05 to go in the second quarter.
St. Ed’s would put up another score with 1:42 left in the first half when Daire darted to pay dirt from 15 yards out. Landry tacked on the extra point as the Blue Jays extended their lead to 27-0.
Davis and Daire would each go on to score once more in the third quarter and Gus Brown would find Henry Brown for a 50-yard touchdown pass, allowing St. Ed’s to open up a 47-0 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
The last score of the night came on a 20 yard run from Kaleb George with 3:30 to go in the fourth quarter.
