Basile rolls by Gueydan; set for showdown with Oberlin

GUEYDAN -- The Basile Bearcats garnered 407 yards of total offense as they rolled past the Gueydan Bears in a 42-14 win Friday night.
With the win, Basile improves to 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in district play. The Bearcats are scheduled to take on the Oberlin Tigers Friday night in a game that could put the league in a three way tie for first place.
Basile took control of the lead in the first quarter when Horace Edwards scooted across the goal line from 12 yards out. Jose Palacios added the extra point giving the Bearcats a 7-0 lead with 8:22 to go in the first quarter.
Two and a half minutes later, Basile found the end zone once again. This time it was Cole Manuel hitting Jared Thomas on a 40 yard touchdown pass. Palacios tacked on the extra point and the Bearcats now led 14-0 with 5:50 to go in the opening quarter.
Gueydan answered back early on in the second quarter. With 10:33 to go in the period, Cohen Guidry completed a six yard pass to Carsyn Simon. The two-point run failed making it a 14-6 game in favor of Basile.
The Bearcats did not let that score stand for long. Not two minutes later, Manuel connected raced his way to pay dirt from 19 yards out to extend the Basile lead. The extra point was good off of the foot of Palacios, and with 8:24 to go in the half, the Bearcats now led 21-6.
The third quarter belonged to Basile, as they were able to pick up two more touchdowns. The first came at the 10:25 mark when Ethan Langley busted his way in from six yards out. The second, a four yard run by Ethan Bazinet at the 5:10 mark of the period gave the Bearcats a commanding 35-6 advantage.
The final score of the night for Basile came in the fourth quarter as Ethan Bazinet sprinted in from 17 yards out.
Gueydan added a late touchdown in the final three minutes of the game to make it a more respectable score.
Bazinet and Langley had almost identical nights as Bazinet rushed the ball eight times for 78 yards and two touchdowns. Langley also carried the ball eight times, but was one yard shy of Bazinet’s total at 77 yards and a score.
Manuel was four of five on the night for 84 yards and a touchdown. Thomas led all receivers with three catches for 72 yards and a touchdown.
