BASILE -- In dominant fashion, the Basile Bearcats rolled past the Magnolia School of Excellence Mariners 40-0 Friday night, to pick up a Class 1A first round playoff win Friday night.
With the win, Basile improved to 4-2 on the season. The Bearcats will now travel to Haynesville to take on the Golden Tornado in the regional round of the post-season for the second time in two years.
Just how dominate were the Bearcats?
With running time for the entire second half, Basile threw only one pass the entire game and still managed to rack up 244 yards of rushing on 32 carries; an average of 7.6 yards per carry.
After the game, Basile head coach Kevin Bertrand lauded his team’s effort against the Mariners.
“We came into this game wanting to establish our running game, and we did just that,” stated Bertrand. “On a sloppy night like tonight, we could not afford to turn the ball over and give them more possessions. Our guys came out and made sure that we secured the football and got after them up front.”
“We knew that if we took care of our business then we could come away with a win,” Bertrand continued. “Our players could have easily given a half of an effort, but they put everything out on the field tonight. I am so proud of the way we came ready to play.”
Basile struck early and often in the contest. The Bearcats picked up scores in every quarter but the last quarter in their run away win.
In the first quarter, the Bearcats made sure they established their power running game. The first touchdown of the night came on a 15-yard run by Ethan Langley with 8:20 left to go in the opening period.
The extra point was no good, however, the Bearcats found themselves with a 6-0 lead at the 8:20 mark of the first quarter.
Basile did not rest on its laurels following its first score of the night. Less than seven minutes later, the Bearcats were back on the scoreboard.
This time it was Ashton Deaville who found the end zone when he rumbled in from seven yards out. The two-point run failed giving the Bearcats a 12-0 lead.
Finding themselves in control of the game, the Bearcats went on to put up three more scores in the second quarter. The first score came on a two yard run by quarterback Cole Manuel at the 9:15 mark.
The second score happened with 2:36 left in the half, as Ethan Bazinet found the end zone on a three yard rush. Bazinet crossed the goal line once more in the quarter on a 56-yard sprint with 1:47 left in the period to put the Bearcats on top 34-0.
The final touchdown of the night occurred in the third quarter of play when Horace Edwards plunged his way in from nine yards out at the seven minute mark.
