The Evangeline Parish Special Olympics Track and Field Event was held at Basile High School, on Wednesday, April 5. The event was a huge success, according to Social Emotional Learning Coordinator Tommy Jones. In attendance were former New Orleans Saints and LSU great Devery Henderson, Zydeco recording artist Leon Chavis, who sang the national anthem, former LSU national champion linebacker Lionel Turner, former LSU national champion Jarvis Reyes, former Ville Platte High and UL Lafayette star Tyreona Doucet, former Northwest head coach and former Ville Platte High assistant coach John Babineaux, and State Special Olympics coordinator Brock Banos along with several school board members and other elected officials. The students competed in the buddy walk, long jump, mini-javelin, softball toss, tennis ball toss, 50m run and 100m run. In an effort to make sure the event was unified, different groups from three different high schools throughout the parish volunteered to assist with the event. The groups were VPHS JROTC, VPHS Beta Club, VPHS National Honor Society, VPHS JAG, Mamou High JAG, and the Basile High Cheerleaders.
