Pedestrian is killed in accident

On Thursday, October 5, at approximately 6:34 a.m., the Mamou Police Department initiated an investigation into a single motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on Hwy 95 between the intersections of East Street and Tate Street. The preliminary investigation revealed that 68-year-old Dejean Guillory (of the 100 block of Cross Street) was wearing dark clothing while walking east in the center of the east bound lane of Hwy 95 when he was struck by a vehicle driven by Kenneth Manuel. The vehicle was also traveling in the east bound lane of Hwy 95. Guillory was mortally wounded on impact and pronounced dead at the scene. Crashes involving pedestrians can often be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines.The Mamou Police Department urges pedestrians to consider these safety tips when crossing public roadways. Pedestrians should wear light-color or reflective clothing and should avoid walking on the roadway in dark areas. Pedestrians must assume that approaching motorist cannot see them, especially at night. Pedestrians should cross roadways in well-lit, designated areas and should always walk facing traffic.
