Proposed tax for animal shelter is quashed

By: HEATHER BOGARD Associate Editor After several residents voiced their concerns on the proposed animal shelter tax during the Evangeline Parish Police Jury meeting, held August 5, President Bryan Vidrine asked for a motion to place the tax on the November 5, ballot.

Workforce grows despite unemployment rate increase

Unemployment rates were up in the Tri-Parish area in June, but the workforce grew by 326 or 0.5% compared to June 2023. The Tri-Parish workforce in June totaled 69,281, up from 68,955 in June 2023, according to data released by the Louisiana Workforce Commission on July 26.

Fr. Downs, of St. Peter’s in Pine Prairie, passes away

By: TONY MARKS Editor Father Gregory Downs, of St. Peter Catholic Church in Pine Prairie and St. Theresa Catholic Church in St. Landry, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. He died at St. Frances Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria at the age of 63.
