Fontenot is charged

On February 11, 2023, Detectives with the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to the intersection of LA 95 and
Jake Ln. in reference to a drive by shooting that took place at that location. Upon arrival, Detectives observed the scene
and noticed that multiple gun shots were fired striking the victim’s vehicle numerous times with several bullets almost
striking the victim.
As the investigation continued, it was discovered that the victim, who is an elected official for the City of Mamou
witnessed a fight near a bar on 6 th street in Mamou that resulted in shots being fired. As the victim left the area, a
relative of one of the subjects involved in the fight on 6 th St. (Douglas Fontenot) and an unidentified passenger in the
suspect vehicle followed the victim to the intersection of LA 95 and Jake Ln. While at that location shots were fired at
the victim’s vehicle by the suspects while in transit and immediately fled the area. Suspect Douglas Fontenot was later
identified and arrested for Attempted 1 st Degree Murder and Assault by Drive by Shooting.
This investigation is still ongoing. If anyone has any information in reference to this incident or the identity of the
