Battle of Hwy 104: Mamou basketball splits a pair of games against Oberlin

OBERLIN – The Oberlin Lady Tigers used a hard-charging third quarter where they outscored the Mamou Lady Demons to power them to a 61-41 win Monday night on their home court. Oberlin (10-2) outgunned Mamou 22-7 in the third quarter alone to win its second game in a row.

Fonder grows the heart at LHSAA Prep Classic

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. That was pretty much my evaluation of my time spent this weekend covering the LHSAA Prep Football Classic for a sister newspaper in Mansfield. The last time I was there was seven years ago, covering the 2014 Prep Classic for The American Press in Lake Charles.

Panthers meet their match in Crowley

CROWLEY – Pine Prairie’s boys basketball team met its match Tuesday night with the Crowley Gents. Evenly matched in skill, size and athleticism, the two teams went back-and-forth throughout the game. But, the Panthers showed resilience and closed the game out on a 14-3 run to take a 53-47 win.

Basile Bearcat wrestlers ready to go for four

The Basile Bearcats are entering the 2021-22 wrestling season with big smiles and the hope for a fourth consecutive state championship. The goal of a fourth straight title is most definitely in reach, considering Basile returns 11 starters out of 13 weight classes.

Shorthanded Bearcats begin season with loss to South Beau

A large crowd of Bearcat fans gathered at McFarlain Memorial Gym on Thursday, Dec. 2, to see the debut of the 2021-22 version of BHS wrestling. Only five official matches were held out of the 13 scheduled weight divisions against the South Beauregard Golden Knights.
In no particular order are Kortlyn Malbrew, Kaydan Coward, Jayla Williams, Destiny Lavigne, Jhae’veonna Freeman, Shayla Hickerson, Tashayli Poullard, Tahjalyn Jack, Saniah Williams, Vandryua Wilson, Rae’osha Thomas, Kenzie Stevens, and Jacaitlyn Ardoin.

VILLE PLATTE — The 2021 Evangeline Parish basketball tournament wrapped up last Saturday with its championship games. When the smoke cleared on the final two games at Ville Platte High School, the host school swept the events with convincing wins.

VILLE PLATTE -- Two seconds remained on the clock. The Ville Platte Bulldogs had the final in-bound play. After battling for four quarters and two overtimes, it came down to one shot.

VILLE PLATTE -- VILLE PLATTE – The Ville Platte girls’ basketball team is starting to build momentum. After Monday’s nail-biting 40-38 win over Opelousas, they followed it up with a 61-35 blowout of Mamou on Wednesday night.

Head coach Roy Serie walked into a difficult situation when he accepted the position of head football coach midseason at Ville Platte High. Following the dismissal of Jorie Randle, Serie was tasked with rejuvenating a program that had lost its way.
