EUNICE -- It was a long, hot weekend for the VPGSA 8U Coach Pitch All-Stars. However, being the fighters they are, Ville Platte managed to work their way to a third place finish at the PONY Regional Tournament last weekend.
The All-Stars will now compete at the PONY World Series to be held in Youngsville beginning on July 17. Opening ceremonies is scheduled for July 16.
“The girls did an outstanding job throughout the entire tournament,” stated Ville Platte head coach Jason Fontenot. “This was only the first time we lost on a Saturday in any tournament we have played in. I am super proud of this team, and I think we are peaking at the right time, especially heading into the World Series.”
Ville Platte only got the chance to play one pool game on Friday, as the other game got cancelled. Nevertheless, the All-Stars made the most of it, taking down Eunice 10-9.
On Saturday, Ville Platte entered bracket play with a championship on their mind, and they let the other teams know that with an 11-1 win over North Vermilion.
A long delay in Ville Platte’s next bracket game did not bode well for the All-Stars as they fell to Kinder 13-0 to drop down to the loser’s bracket. That fact did not deter Ville Platte the least little bit, as they turned things around with a commanding 18-7 win over Gonzales.
On Sunday, Ville Platte faced a team that they had already seen in the tournament, Eunice. This game was just as close as the first contest against the St. Landry parish crew, as the All-Stars slipped past Eunice 10-8.
A battle with Youngsville was on tap for the All-Stars in the ensuing bracket game. This time Ville Platte left no doubt as to who the better team was, blowing past Youngsville 17-2.
The All-Stars continued their winning ways in the next bracket game with a 10-3 victory over Kinder. That win put them one game away from the championship.
Unfortunately, time and luck ran out for Ville Platte, as they fell to Rayne 6-5. The All-Stars led 5-4 after four innings of play, but Rayne was able to collect two runs in the bottom of the last inning to take the win.
