YOUNGSVILLE -- Accomplishments come in many different forms.
Some of those accomplishments involve championships, but some appear in the effort given to win those championships.
Such is the case for the Ville Platte Girl’s Softball Association 6U All-Stars. After taking home the PONY Regional Tournament title one week ago, Ville Platte came here this past weekend with a quest to double up on that championship with another tournament win at PONY Sectionals.
Despite their valiant effort the All-Stars came up one win short of that goal, taking home the runner-up spot to the home town team. Still, head coach Sadie Figueiredo had much praise for her young team.
“It is a little disappointing to not come away with the win in the finals, but I am so proud of our team and their effort all season long,” stated Figueiredo. “These girls could have quit with the heat and the number of games we played all season long, but they persevered and showed some real toughness. Myself and my assistant coaches Robyn Duos, Emily Fontenot and Ashley Veillon could not be prouder of this team.”
Ville Platte began the tournament with a 15-12 loss to Livingston. The All-Stars were able to match Livingston run for run in the first two innings, as the teams found themselves tied at eight apiece.
After a scoreless third inning, Livingston was able to pick up three runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to out produce Ville Platte and pick up the win.
The All-Stars rebounded nicely with a 16-11 win over Deridder. Ville Platte managed to plate four runs in all four at bats, as they held Deridder to zero runs in two of their five trips to the plate.
The All-Stars continued their winning ways in the next two games, picking up a 17-12 victory in game three and a 26-23 revenge win over Livingston in game four.
That win over Livingston came in a six inning slugfest. Ville Platte and Livingston each scored four runs in the first five innings of play. The difference in the game came when the All-Stars plated six runs in the final inning and held their opponent to only three runs.
With that win, Ville Platte now had to take down Youngsville twice to pick up their second title in as many weekends. The All-Stars were up to the challenge in game five, taking a 14-8 win over the Lafayette Parish team.
Ville Platte controlled the game from the beginning, outscoring Youngsville 8-4 in the first two innings of play. Both teams were shut out in the third inning, but the All-Stars found a way to match Youngsville in the fourth inning, picking up four more runs to make it a 12-8 game. Ville Platte finished off the win, adding two more runs in the fifth inning.
That left one more game for the championship. This time, Youngsville had Ville Platte’s number, as they escaped with a 14-12 win and the title.
The difference in the game came in the third and fifth innings, where Youngsville was able to out pace the All-Stars by five runs. Ville Platte, had an opportunity to tie the game up in the sixth and final inning, but could not get a run across the plate to continue the contest.
