Ville Platte starts the season off with huge win

VILLE PLATTE -- The Ville Platte High Lady Bulldogs did it the right way in their first game on the softball diamond for 2020, as they shutout the Avoyelles Lady Mustangs 9-0 Monday afternoon.
Ville Platte is scheduled to play Opelousas today at home. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
After sitting Avoyelles down in order in the top of the first inning, Ville Platte scratched their first run of the game across in the bottom half of the inning. Hannah Monier got things going with a lead off single.
Monier then proceeded to steal second base, putting herself in scoring position. Following a strikeout, Kenderlyn Doucet single to left field, plating Monier for the Lady Bulldog’s first run of the game.
The Lady Mustangs went down in order again in the top of the second, as Monier struck out two of the three batters she faced in the at bat.
Ville Platte added to their lead in the bottom of the second, scoring an additional run. With one out, Josey Ardoin was hit by a pitch and promptly stole second base. One out later, Monier drove a 1-2 pitch into left-center field for a double that scored Ardoin.
Neither team could find a way to put any runs across in the third inning. However, Ville Platte picked up a solo run in the bottom of the fourth to go up 3-0 when Hailey Bordelon walked and came all the way around to score on stolen bases and a passed ball.
The Lady Bulldogs extended their advantage in the bottom of the fifth by one more run. Madison Monier singled, stole second base and reached third on a single from Jenna Smith.
Monier would wind up crossing home plate on a passed ball to give Ville Platte a 4-0 lead.
Monier and the Lady Bulldog defense continued to stymie the Avoyelles’ offense, holding them scoreless in their final two at bats. Ville Platte put the game away for good in the bottom of the sixth when they plated five more runs.
Madison Monier was three-for four with two RBI to lead Ville Platte.
