Ville Platte notches district wins over Church Point

VILLE PLATTE -- The Ville Platte Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs dominated the Church Point Bears and Lady Bears, with each Ville Platte squad winning by double digits. The ladies won 65-43 while the boys won 62-43.
The Bulldogs improve to 17-9 on the season and 3-1 in district play. They will host Pine Prairie tomorrow night for their next district contest.
The Lady Bulldogs improve to 12-11 on the season and 2-3 in district play.
The girls’ game started off fairly close, but the inefficient shooting from the Lady Bears allowed the Lady Bulldogs to take an early lead. Church Point was only able to connect on 28 percent of their shots in the first quarter. At the end of the first period the Lady Bulldogs held a 15-10 lead.
Ville Platte started to gain momentum and pull away in the second period. Although their shooting had improved, Church Point seemed to be having communication problems turning over the ball to the Lady Bulldogs in crucial moments.
Neither team was able to get off many shots, but Ville Platte was still the far more efficient team. The Lady Bulldogs held a 32-17 lead as the two teams headed to the locker rooms.
Church Point stepped up defensively in the third period, playing far more aggressive. This worked in Ville Platte’s favor, although, causing numerous fouls on the Lady Bears. Despite being out scored, Ville Platte held a 42-26 lead going into the fourth period.
Ville Platte further cemented their lead in the fourth, proving to be too fast for Church Point. When the dust settled, the Lady Bulldogs stood on top 65-43.
In the boy’s game, the Bulldogs sounded fairly confident before their game, and showed it in the opening minutes, as they earned a 14-4 lead at the 4:50 mark of the first period. Ville Platte’s lead never fell below 10 after this initial flurry. Ville Platte had an astounding 23-8 lead at the end of the first period.
Scoring wise, the second period was close, but the Bulldogs maintained a 33-19 advantage at the end of the half.
Ville Platte pulled away quickly in the second half, giving the Bears almost no room for a comeback in either quarter. Despite the Bears best efforts, they were unable to overcome the insurmountable lead thanks to a heavy-pressure defense from the Bulldogs that seemed to intimidate the depleted Church Point offense.
