The Ville Platte High boy’s and girl’s basketball teams have had very different seasons up to this point.
Coming into this past Tuesday night’s action, the Bulldogs had suffered only one loss on the year at 9-1 and looked to stay on the winning path when they traveled to Lafayette to take on David Thibodaux.
Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs have struggled at times this season and found themselves at 3-4 overall heading to David Thibodaux needing a win to even their record and gain some momentum for the remainder of the year.
As it turned out, both teams got what they wanted, as the Bulldogs took down David Thibodaux 65-60 and the Lady Bulldogs pulled off a 41-33 victory.
In the girl’s game, Ville Platte and David Thibodaux matched each other point for point, as the teams found themselves tied at 9-9 when the period came to a close.
The game remained close throughout the second quarter. But, by the time the half had come to an end, David Thibodaux owned a one point advantage, 11-10.
That advantage grew in the third quarter. Behind some good defense, David Thibodaux outscored the Lady Bulldogs 10-5 to hold a 21-15 lead heading into the final period.
Ville Platte did not let the situation bother them, scrapping their way to a 17-3 fourth quarter edge behind Kayden Coward’s shooting effort.
For the game, Coward collected 16 points, including two three-pointers, to lead the way for the Lady Bulldogs.
The boy’s followed a similar path that the girl’s game did. Just like the girl’s contest, both Ville Platte and David Thibodaux were tied, 13-13, when the horn sounded to end the first quarter.
It was bucket for bucket in the second period, with the Bulldogs owning a slight edge, 26-24, thanks to the two three-point baskets by Tyler Jones, as the two teams headed into the locker room.
Jones once again was true from beyond the arc in the third quarter, hitting two more three-point baskets. But, even with that, David Thibodaux outmatched Ville Platte 21-20, to cut the lead down to one point.
Never-the-less, the Bulldogs did not allow the third period surge gather any steam. Ville Platte finished the game with a 19-15 advantage as Jahmal Byers led the way with 11 points of his own.
Jones scored 21 points to lead the Bulldogs in scoring, while Byers added 18 points.
In the meantime, the Sacred Heart Trojans also hit the road to Gueydan as they hoped to gain another win to add to their overall record of 3-7.
Unfortunately for the Trojans, the Bears outproduced Sacred Heart by 14 points in the second half to secure a 44-40 win.
The game started out all Trojans, as they jumped out to a 17-5 lead by balancing their scoring all over the floor.
Gueydan found some offensive rythm in the second quarter and outscored the Trojans 11-9 to only trail by 10 as the first half closed out.
The Bears continued their offensive succes in the third quarter, gaining a 17-11 advantage before the period could end.
Sacred Heart’s four point lead evaporated in the final quarter, as Gueydan found a way to edge out the Trojan’s 11-3 down the stretch.
Jack Lahaye led the way for Sacred Heart with 13 points.
