OAKDALE -- When a new age group is created for all-star play, growing pains are supposed to occur.
That is not what happened to the Ville Platte Dixie Youth 7U Coach Pitch All-Stars as they rolled to a 5-1 record and an unofficial first place showing at the sub-district tournament held last weekend.
Ville Platte finished tied with Deridder for the top spot, but gave up less runs during play, actually putting them as champions. However, because Ville Platte is hosting the district tournament, they were not eligible to bring home any hardware.
Nevertheless, the All-Stars proved that they are a force to be reckoned with come June 20 when the district tournament begins. That tourney will take place in Ville Platte at the recreational complex along with the 6U T-Ball district tournament.
Ville Platte collected their first win in sub-district with a win over Deridder by the scored of 7-3. The All-Stars put up two runs in the first, three runs in the fourth and two more runs in the sixth to down Deridder.
The bats continued warming up in game two, with Ville Platte taking down Oakdale 9-1. The All-Stars held a 2-0 lead after one inning of play and a 3-1 lead following the third inning. Ville Platte collected six runs over the their last two at bats to secure the win.
The best offensive performance of the tournament came in game three, as Ville Platte smashed cross-parish rival Pine Prairie 17-1. The game lasted only three innings and saw the All-Stars scored seven runs in two of those innings.
The only blemish on Ville Platte’s record came in game four when the All-Stars fell to Deridder 13-5. The majority of Deridder’s runs came in their first two at bats as they plated six runs in the first and five runs in the second to open up an 11-3 lead.
Ville Platte rebounded rather nicely in game five. The All-Stars got back on track offensively by scoring an 11-0 win over Oakdale. Ville Platte’s big inning came in the fourth when they racked up six total runs.
The final game of sub-district play saw Ville Platte collect a 7-2 win over Pine Prairie. Ville Platte led 5-0 after three innings and 5-2 after four innings of play.
