OBERLIN -- In their first real action of the All-Star season, the Ville Platte Dixie Minors showed tremendous potential as they battled their way to a 3-0-1 record in the East Sub-District Tournament held here this past weekend.
“We came into this tournament basically treating it like a scrimmage,” stated head coach Ched Fontenot. “We were looking to find some more arms to be able to go later on in the season and to see where we are at so far. We have a really young team with five nine-year-olds, so we have to rely heavily on those players. After looking back on the tournament, I think we still have a lot of work to do on defense. But, we improved at the plate throughout the tournament. Now we just have to get back to work and get ready for district.”
Ville Platte began the tournament with a resounding win over Vernon Parish. The All-Stars used a three run second inning and a six run fourth inning to blow past Vernon 12-1.
In their second game, Ville Platte fell behind 2-0 to Pine Prairie after one inning of play, but was able to get back on track offensively to power past their intra-parish rivals 10-4.
The All-Stars answered the two runs from Pine Praire with four runs in the second inning, one run in the third, three runs in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth and final inning.
A see-saw battle in game three saw Ville Platte and Oakdale battle to a 9-9 tie. The two teams exchanged three run first innings before Oakdale would take a 7-4 lead with a 4-1 run advantage in the second inning.
Ville Platte chipped away, scoring a single run in the third inning and adding three more runs in the fourth inning to make it an 8-8 game. The two clubs each scored solo runs down the stretch to keep the game in a tie.
The final game of the tournament found Ville Platte ahead 3-2 over Mamou after two innings of play. That lead stretched to 5-2 just two innings later.
Mamou did pick up two more runs in the top of the sixth, but Ville Platte shut the momentum down to hold on to a 5-4 win.
