Ville Platte boys pick up huge district win; girls suffer big loss

VILLE PLATTE -- The Ville Platte Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs took on the Lake Arthur Tigers and Lady Tigers Tuesday night in key district contests for both teams.
The Lady Bulldogs fell 55-26 to a dominating Lady Tiger team that took over in the first quarter and never looked back. With the loss the Lady Bulldogs fall to 6-10 on the season and 0-1 in district play. They will travel to Kinder this Friday for their second district contest.
In a game that could help determine the district championship, the Bulldogs took down a two loss Tiger squad 62-51. With the win the Bulldogs improve to 17-1 on the season and 1-0 in district play. They will join the Lady Bulldogs and travel to Kinder for their next district contest.
The ladies were the first to hit the court and Ville Platte was the first to open up the scoring with four quick points. After the short run by the Lady Bulldogs, Lake Arthur dominated the possessions, only allowing three scoring attempts from Ville Platte, while collecting 10 points of their own. The first period closed with the Lady Tigers on top 10-4.
The second period went nearly the exact same way as the first period, with the Lady Bulldogs firing off a quick basket and the Lady Tigers shutting them down the rest of the period. Lake Arthur gathered nine points of their own before Ville Platte’s Kaydan Coward was able to score a layup at the last second. As both teams headed into their locker rooms, Lake Arthur found themselves up 19-8.
Both teams came out swinging in the third quarter, with Ville Platte desperately fighting to stay in the game. There looked to be hope for the Lady Bulldogs, as they found themselves within six points, 23-17, at the 4:40 mark of the period.
The Lady Tigers regained their footing, scoring 12 unanswered points over the next 2:09. The two teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter, leaving the score 37-20 in favor of Lake Arthur as the period came to a close.
The Lady Tigers turned up the heat in the final period, raking in 18 points and holding Ville Platte to two points. Lake Arthur benched their starters down the stretch, allowing the Lady Bulldogs to score four points in the last seconds of the game.
Alyssa Soileau and Trinity Leday each contributed eight points for Ville Platte.
Just like the girls, the Ville Platte boys also started off rather slow. Lake Arthur held the lead for the majority of the first period, with the Tigers holding fast to a 9-5 lead with 1:38 left in the period.
All of a sudden, the Bulldogs decided to turn up the heat, as Jahmal and Tye’Wuan Byers combined for 11 points to close out the period, giving Ville Platte a 16-9 lead heading into the ensuing period.
