LEESVILLE -- After waiting two days to play in the West Sub-District tournament, the Ville Platte Dixie Youth 8U Coach Pitch All-Stars came with the intensity and took home the first place trophy back to Flat Town.
The tournament, which was to start a week ago today, was delayed because of all of the rain that pounded Louisiana last week. So, the All-Stars had to sit out until Saturday to begin their quest for the title.
When play did begin, Ville Platte took a first game loss and turned into a 7-1 record and a tournament title.
In the very first game of competition on Saturday, the All-Stars looked a tad bit shaky, as they fell to Vernon American 11-9. In that game, Ville Platte held a 6-5 lead after three innings of play.
The All-Stars added three more runs in the fourth to expand their advantage. However, Vernon American posted five runs in the bottom half of the inning to sneak away with the two run win.
Ville Platte bounced back in the second game on Saturday by sliding past Dequincy 8-7. The All-Stars jumped out to a 7-1 lead after one inning of play and had to hold off Dequincy down the stretch to seal the victory.
The bats came alive on Sunday for Ville Platte. In their first game that day, the All-Stars mashed the baseball for 18 runs and held South Beauregard to only three points for their second win of the tournament.
Game two on Sunday allowed Ville Platte to put their defense on display, as they blanked Deridder 13-0. In that game, Deridder was unable to put a runner on the bags, as the All-Stars struck early and often at the plate.
Monday’s games brought more of the same from Ville Platte. In their opening contest, the All-Stars did not let Dequincy hang around too long, as they tallied a 19-3 win.
Ville Platte allowed all three runs scored against them to occur in the first inning. But, the All-Stars did not waiver, picking up seven runs of their own in their at bat. The All-Stars plated one run in the second, seven more in the third and four more in the fourth en route to their fourth win of the tournament.
Ville Platte finished out Monday’s play with a 12-7 revenge win over Vernon American. Tuesday’s first contest saw the All-Stars route Deridder once again, this time by a 17-2 margin.
The final game of the tournament came on Tuesday. In that contest, Ville Platte took a 6-5 lead after three innings of play, but smashed the game open by putting up seven more runs in the fourth to sail past South Beauregard 13-9.
