SULPHUR -- Timely hits are a must for any softball team when they are trying to reach the top.
Unfortunately for the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans, those timely hits did not become reality, as they fell to the Ouachita Christian Lady Eagles 12-2 in the Division IV state semi-finals here Friday.
In the game, Sacred Heart left five runners in scoring position in crucial situations. Another factor in the contest were the errors. The Lady Trojans finished the game with six total miscues, which led to extension of innings or runs for Ouachita Christian.
With the loss Sacred Heart finishes the year with an overall record of 12-14.
Following the game, Sacred Heart head coach Chris Mayes talked about the missed opportunities that befell his club.
“We just did not get enough hits in a timely fashion,” stated Mayes. “It is hard to overcome leaving runners in scoring position. Still, I am very happy with the way our year went. I am happy with the culture of the program and the way the players come to each and every game ready to win. The future looks bright for Sacred Heart softball.”
Mayes bursted with pride when mentioning the seniors that will no longer don the blue and gold.
“These seniors have showed strong leadership and an amazing courage to win all year long,” Mayes said. “They are some of the hardest workers I have ever been around. This program will miss them tremendously.”
The theme of the game began in earnest for the Lady Trojans in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Sacred Heart put runners on second and third, but could not come away with the big hit to put points on the board.
Ouachita Christian took advantage of that unfavorable start by picking up a single run in the bottom half of the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead.
Neither team could manage to plate a run in the second inning. Once again, the Lady Trojans had a chance to put a run across getting three runners to second base. However, Sacred Heart came up empty for a second time.
After getting the Lady Trojans up and down in the top of the third, the Lady Eagles made the most of their at bat, scoring 11 total runs to jump out to a 12-0 lead. Seven hits, including three doubles, and three Sacred Heart errors led to the big half inning for Ouachita Christian.
The Lady Trojans first run of the game came in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Camille Fontenot singled and reached second on a walk issued to Emilyse Bergeron.
A fielder’s choice off of the bat of Lauren Shipp got Bergeron at second, but gave Sacred Heart runners at first and third with two outs. A single by Natalie Doucet plated Fontenot and put the score at 12-1 in favor of Ouachita Christian.
The final run of the game came in the top of the fifth when the Lady Trojans picked up run number two. Sydney Soileau singled in the lead off spot and moved to third on a double by Tobie Landry.
Following a strike out, Camille Soileau singled home Sydney Soileau to make it a 12-2 game. Regrettably, Sacred Heart was unable to sustain any more offense, thus ending the game and their season.
Sydney Soileau, Tobie Landry, Camille Soileau, Camille Fontenot, Lauren Shipp and Natalie Doucet all picked up base hits to lead the Lady Trojans at the plate.
