BASILE -- The Basile Bearcats and Lady Bearcats were unable to bear down when needed, as they dropped district contests to the Gueydan Bears and Honey Bears Friday night.
The Lady Bearcats could not overcome the inside game of Gueydan, as they fell for the fifth time in a row in a 63-51 loss. Basile dropped to 7-14 on the season and 0-5 in District 4-1A play. They play at home against Oberlin on Tuesday.
In the nightcap, the Bearcats let a three-point deficit after one quarter of play get away from them, as Gueydan ran away with a 68-36 win. The Bearcats are now 2-13 on the year and 1-4 in league play. They also host Oberlin on Tuesday.
Here is a re-cap of the two games played.

Gueydan (G) vs. Basile
Things looked good for Basile at the start of the contest when Shayla Lavergne scorched the net with a three-pointer just seconds into the game. However, Gueydan was able to find their range from outside, hitting the next four baskets in a row to take an 8-3 lead.
The Lady Bearcats scratched their way back into the game, going on a 6-2 run over the final 2:50 of the period to cut the Honey Bear lead to one, 10-9, as the quarter came to a close.
Basile utilized the momentum built up at the end of the first period to knock down the first seven points of the second quarter, which included a three-point basket from Ryah Ashford. The Lady Bearcat advantage stayed pretty steady for the next 2:07 of the period, until the Honey Bears made waves by scoring the 13 of 17 points to own a 29-24 lead heading into the locker room.
The first seven points scored in the third quarter all came from the free throw line, with Basile picking up four of those seven points. The teams then traded baskets over the next minute of the game, as Gueydan found themselves with a 35-32 lead with 5:39 left in the period.
That is when Honey Bear center Kirsten Reed took over, scoring the next five points in a row. By the time the horn sounded to end the quarter, Gueydan held a 48-39 lead.
The final quarter did not go Basile’s way at all. Gueydan continued to feed the ball down into the low post with huge success.
The nine point lead remained solid, with a few exceptions, until the final minutes of the contest. From there it was all Gueydan, as they finished strong for the win.
Lainey Ashford had 13 to lead the Lady Bearcats.

Gueydan (B) vs. Basile
Gueydan began the game with a 5-0 run, but that run was answered at the 5:01 mark with a Jamal Ceasar three-point basket. The Bearcats found enough offense after that bucket to go on a 5-2 run and take an 8-7 lead with 3:47 left to go in the period.
The Bears found their rhythm on offense mid-way through the quarter, overtaking the Bearcats 11-10 1:46 seconds later. As the quarter drew to a close, Gueydan managed to extend that lead to three points, 15-12.
Gueydan found its way to the line to start the second quarter, hitting on three of four free throws. Basile responded with a 5-0 run, including a three-point basket from Travis Mondares.
Nevertheless, the Bears remained steady on the offensive side of the floor enough to own a 31-25 lead as the first half buzzer sounded.
The first three minutes of the third quarter saw Basile stay within striking distance of Gueydan. But, the Bears slowly began to wear down the Bearcat defense and pulled away for a 50-32 lead by the time the period ended.
From there it was all Gueydan, as the Bears pushed past Basile 18-4 in the final quarter of play.
Ceasar had 13 to lead the Bearcats.
