ULL Ragin’ Cajuns use aerial attack to subdue Redhawks; pick up record win

MOBILE, AL -- Junior quarterback Levi Lewis threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns as the ULL Ragin’ Cajuns as erased an early 7-0 deficit to take down the Miami (OH) Redhawks 27-17 in the Lending Tree Bowl Monday night.
The Ragin’ Cajun win, the 11th of the season for ULL, set a record for most wins in school history, beating the previous record by two wins. It was the first bowl game win for the Ragin’ Cajuns since 2014. ULL finished the year at 11-3.
After the game, Ragin’ Cajun head coach Billy Napier lauded his team and their effort despite having to wait a month to play the game.
“I thought it was a really good football game,” ULL coach Billy Napier said. “We had a few undisciplined penalties at times — some procedural issues — but for the most part, we didn’t turn the football over. I thought we tackled well.”
“Outside of the one fumble we had early, I thought we had pretty good ball security,” Napier continued. “I thought we had good plans. I thought we had really good practices leading up the game. We made progress as a team.”
ULL, known for its monster running game, relied on Lewis’ arm to battle their way back in the second quarter to take a 10-7 lead heading into the locker room.
The Redhawks got on the board first on Jaylon Bester’s five-yard run with 10:25 to go in the second quarter.
The Cajuns answered on the next drive when Stevie Artigue hit a 33-yard field goal to make it a 7-3 game.
ULL picked up their first touchdown of the night with 1:05 to go in the first half as Elijah Mitchell blasted his way in from two-yards out. As the teams broke for halftime, the Cajuns held a 10-7 lead.
ULL began the third quarter with another scoring drive that was capped off with a nine yard pass from Lewis to Ja’Marcus Bradley, putting the Cajuns up 17-3.
Following a Miami (OH) field goal on the ensuing drive, Lewis found Bradley again, this time from 12 yards out, just 2:52 seconds later to move ahead 24-10.
The Redhawks would put the ball in the end zone on their next drive, but ULL found their way to another Artigue field goal with four minutes to go in the contest.
