VILLE PLATTE -- The annual Sacred Heart Turkey Tournament got underway this Monday night and several parish teams were represented among those schools playing in the round robin affair.
The tournament is a three day event and draws boys and girls teams from around the area. Each team was guaranteed three games, one on each day.
On the boy’s side, Mamou, Pine Prairie and Sacred Heart were the parish teams represented, while Basile, Pine Prairie and Sacred Heart served as parish reps on the girl’s side.
Other boy’s teams included in the tourney were Crowley, Kaplan, Iota, JS Clark, and Southside. Westminster, St. Ed’s, Opelousas, Alexadria and Crowley filled out the rest of the girl’s teams.
On Monday, the tournament got underway with the Pine Prairie girls falling to Alexandria 52-43. That game was followed by the Basile girls squeezing past St. Ed’s 46-45. The Pine Prairie boys eased past JS Clark 76-63 in the next contest of the day.
Opelousas blasted Westminster 53-15 in the girl’s game that followed. Mamou fell to Kaplan 53-46 in their first game of the tournament.
The Crowley boys and girls were supposed to follow the Mamou/Kaplan contest, but unfortunately their bus was involved in a fender bender on the way to the game. That meant that the Sacred Heart girls did not get the opportunity to play on Monday because they were scheduled to play Crowley in the third to last game.
Also, because the Crowley boys could not make their game against Southside, Sacred Heart agreed to play that game for them, which forced the Trojans to have to play back-to-back, as they were already scheduled to play Iota in the nightcap.
Unfortunately for the Trojans, they were taken down in both games, as they lost to Southside 59-30 and to Iota 83-43.
Tuesday began with the St. Ed’s girls downing Westminster 40-19. The Opelousas girls handled Pine Prairie 45-35 in the next game.
Crowley eased past Kaplan 59-53 in the boys game that ensued. Alexandria ran past Crowley 51-26 in a girl’s game.
The Iota boys knocked out JS Clark 63-57 in an afternoon game. In their first game of the tournament the Sacred Heart girls fell 37-27 to Basile.
Mamou picked up a win when they took down Sacred Heart 69-33 in the second to last game of the night. And in what was probably the most entertaining game of the tournament, Southside slipped past Pine Prairie 56-54 in the final boy’s game Tuesday.
The Gazette will have full results of Wednesday’s games in Sunday’s edition.
