Trojans drop two; Lady Panthers fall short in comeback

The weather has played havoc on the LHSAA baseball and softball season over the past few weeks.
Nevertheless two teams that did get a chance to play this past week were the Sacred Heart Trojans and the Pine Prairie Lady Panthers.
Coming into this week the Trojans sported an overall record of 2-1-0. Unfortunately for Sacred Heart, they did not end the week with that same record.
In the two games they were able to get in, one on Monday and one on Thursday, the Trojans were 0-2 and had evened their record.
Against Bunkie on Monday, Sacred Heart surrendered an early lead to the Panthers and tried to claw their way back into the game to no avail, as they fell 6-4 on the road.
Bunkie opened the game scoring all of their six runs needed in the top of the first inning. The Trojans picked up a solo run in the bottom half of the inning when Wesley Launey crossed the plate after a base hit from Garrett Fontenot.
It was not until the bottom of the fourth when Sacred Heart could add to their score. Singles by Christian Duplechin and Launey and a walk by Cade Manuel stacked the bases full. Duplechin and Manuel scored on an error by the Panther defense with JT Harper at the plate.
The final run for the Trojans came in the bottom of the fifth. Alec Gotro reached base on a hit by pitch and later scored on a fielder’s choice off of the bat of Manuel.
On Thursday, Sacred Heart had no answer for the St. Mary’s Tigers. St. Mary’s scored in every inning but the fourth to take down the Trojans 18-3.
All three Sacred Heart’s runs came in the top of the fourth inning.
The Pine Prairie Lady Panthers fell to 3-4 on the season after a gut-wrenching 7-6 loss to the Buckeye Lady Panthers on the road Monday.
Buckeye jumped on top of Pine Prairie early on in the game, plating five runs in the first two innings to take a 5-0 lead. From there neither team could produce runs until the seventh and final inning.
In that inning Pine Prairie collected six runs to take over the lead. Allie Fontenot got the scoring started with a two run dinger that followed a Brianna Wall double.
Maycie Hardy singled in two runs, while Kailey Soileau doubled in another two runs to put the Evangeline Parish club on top.
However, Buckeye was not done with their bats. The Rapides Parish club picked up two runs in the bottom of the inning to seal the win.
