Mamou boys; Ville Platte girls take home Parish track championships

BASILE -- Track enthusiasts throughout the area were as giddy as a school boy with a crush on his classmate because of one simple event that took place this past Friday afternoon; the reinstatement of the Evangeline Parish track meet.
The meet which had been on hiatus for the past three years do to the closure of the Basile High track for repairs and the fact that no other high school in the parish has a track to host the meet.
However all of the track coaches in the parish were super excited to be able to once again compete for the title of Evangeline Parish Champion.
“The coaches talked about it before the meet began and we all agreed it was time to get this thing back on its feet,” stated Basile Athletic Director Kevin Bertrand. “We all get along in the parish, which makes this meet so fun. I think everything went really smooth. The only thing is that we could not long jump or triple jump because the pits were just too wet from all of the rain.”
Well after this year’s event, two teams emerged as the best in the parish, as the Mamou boys and the Ville Platte girls laid claim to the team titles in 2019.
The Mamou boys finished the meet with 95 total points, just eight points ahead of runner-up Ville Platte. Basile was third with 71 points while Sacred Heart took fourth with 57 points. Pine Prairie finished fifth with a total of 13 points.
The Ville Platte girls blew the door off all competition with 133 points. Basile finished as runners-up with 52 points. Pine Prairie was a close third collecting 49 points while Sacred Heart took in 39 points and Mamou ended with 33 points.
In the individual categories, Ville Platte’s Alex Soileau was named the Boy’s Outstanding Track person, finishing first in three events. The Lady Bulldogs had two outstanding performances as Vondrayua Wilson took home the Girl’s Outstanding Track person award and Alyssa Fontenot was named the Girl’s Outstanding Field person.
Wilson, an eighth grader, placed first in four events. Fontenot picked up two first place medals in the field. There was no boy’s award for Outstanding Field person.
