Sacred Heart outgunned by rival Opelousas Catholic

VILLE PLATTE -- The Sacred Heart Trojans had no answer for the Opelousas Catholic Vikings Thursday night, as they fell 39-0 in a district contest.
With the loss, the Trojans dropped to 3-3 on the year and 0-2 in district play. Sacred Heart will travel this coming Friday night to take on Slaughter Community Charter.
The beginning of the game was indicative of the entire night for the Trojans, as the Vikings took the opening possession and drove 64 yards down to the Sacred Heart one yard line. On third-and-goal, Opelousas Catholic’s Zach Mengarelli plunged in for the touchdown. The extra point was good off of the foot of Drew Sebastien and with 9:48 to go in the first quarter, the Vikings held a 7-0 lead.
Opelousas Catholic did not waste a whole lot of time putting points on board once again. Receiving the ball back after a Sacred Heart punt, the Vikings took over possession at the Trojan 37-yard line.
On the first play from scrimmage, wide out Devin Thierry hauled in a 37-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jesse Roy. Sebastian tacked on the extra point and Opelousas Catholic now held a 14-0 lead with 4:26 to play in the initial quarter.
A miscue by the Trojans on their next drive wound up costing them on the scoreboard. On a third- and-seven situation, Viking defensive back Keon Coleman picked off a pass that was brought to the Sacred Heart 34-yard line.
Opelousas Catholic ran three plays losing a total of one yard. Facing fourth down and 11, Roy found Thierry once again for a 35-yard scoring pass. With the Sebastian extra point, the Vikings increased their lead to 21-0 with 1:13 to go in the first quarter.
Sacred Heart was able to get some offense going in the second quarter, moving the ball from their 41-yard line down to the Opelousas Catholic 12-yard line. But, on fourth-and-goal, the an errant pass was picked off by defensive back Gavin Guidroz.
The Vikings did add on to their score mid-way through the period when Roy found tight end Adam Purser for a two-yard touchdown pass.
Opelousas Catholic’s final score of the game came on 36 yard field goal by Sebastian with 1:45 left in the third quarter.
