NEW ROADS -- The Catholic of Pointe Coupee Hornets scored with less than ten seconds on the clock to upend the Sacred Heart Trojans 23-17 in a key District 5-1A match-up here Friday night.
With the loss the Trojans fall to 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in district play. Sacred Heart will host Opelousas Catholic Thursday night in another pivotal league game.
The two teams went after each other right from the start, but neither team could get much going in terms of offense in the early going, as the game remained scoreless at the end of one quarter of play.
In fact it was not until the 8:30 mark of the second quarter until points were put up on the board. Starting at their 42-yard line, the Hornets got two big runs, including a 50-yard scamper from Aiden Vosburg that crossed the goal line. The extra point by Nick Carriere was good and Catholic led 7-0.
Sacred Heart was able to mount a drive late in the quarter, taking the ball down to the Hornet 16-yard line. With 54 seconds to go before half, Wesley Launey found Drew Bordelon in the end zone for a Trojan touchdown. The extra point was blocked, making the score 7-6 in favor of Catholic as the two teams headed into the locker room.
The Trojan defense got into the scoring action mid-way through the third quarter, picking up their second safety in as many weeks allowing Sacred Heart to go up 8-7 with 9:36 left in the period.
Four minutes and 24 seconds later, Vosburg found the end zone once again, this time from eight yards out. The two-point run by Collin Grezaffi was successful, putting the Hornets up 15-8.
Late in the third quarter, the Trojans once again found themselves on top when Launey hit Alec Gotro on an 11 yard touchdown pass with 2:20 left. The point after was blocked for the second time, leaving the score 15-14 in favor of Catholic.
The game stayed that way until Launey was able to hit on a 24 yard field goal with 2:54 remaining in the game to give the Trojans a 17-15 lead.
However, the Hornets were able to mount one last drive that culminated in a Grezaffi two yard run with 16 seconds left in the game. The two-point pass was good, lifting the Hornets to a 23-17 win.
