MOSS BLUFF -- Despite the outcome of the game, the Sacred Heart Trojan baseball team gave one of the best Class 5A programs in the state, the Sam Houston High Broncos, all they wanted in a 3-0 loss Tuesday afternoon.
With the loss, Sacred Heart drops to 3-4-1 on the season. The Trojans are scheduled to host Church Point this coming Tuesday afternoon. Game time is set for 4:30.
Sacred Heart picked up a runner in the top of the first when Wesley Launey walked to lead things off. The Trojans had no look plating Launey, as the next three batters in the line-up failed to deliver.
Sam Houston threatened in the bottom of the first getting a runner to third base. However, the Broncos were unable to pick up a run as starting Trojan pitcher Kyle Miller and the Sacred Heart defense shut down the threat.
The second inning was as unproductive for the Trojans as the first inning. Gabe Fontenot reached on a one out single but was unable to advance any farther. Sacred Heart blanked Sam Houston in the bottom of the second, leaving the game in a 0-0 tie.
In the top of the third inning, Sacred Heart’s Drew Bordelon singled to lead things off and reached second base on a fielder’s choice. But again, the Trojans could not produce enough offense to get Bordelon home.
The Broncos put runners at second and third with two outs in the bottom half of that same inning. However, Miller induced a fly ball to right field to kill Sam Houston’s scoring opportunity.
The biggest chance for Sacred Heart to pick up runs came in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs, Alec Gotro singled and Fontenot double right behind him, putting runners at second and third. Unfortunately a strike out ended the Trojan at bat.
The Broncos did not get any runs in the fourth inning either. However, Sam Houston found some offense in the fifth inning, scoring two big runs on one hit, a passed ball and two walks.
The Broncos finished their scoring output in the bottom of the sixth inning, as they picked up the final run of the game.
Sacred Heart did manage to get runners at first and second with two outs, but could not finish the inning with a run.
Miller pitched 5 and one third innings, striking out two and walking two. Gabe Fontenot led the way at the plate, going two for three with a double.
