As the 2018-19 high school basketball season winds down, a few parish teams find themselves in a great position for the playoff run.
Two of those teams, the Ville Platte Bulldogs and the Pine Prairie Panthers are on track to earn top ten seeds when the boy’s post-season gets under way February 22.
The Ville Platte Bulldogs are currently 20-2 on the year, with five games left on the official list, and are tied for first place in District 6-2A with Lake Arthur as each team sports a 4-1 record. In the most updated LHSAA power rankings, Ville Platte sits in the No. 3 spot.
The Pine Prairie Panthers hold the No. 9 position in the power rankings in Class 3A and are tied for second place with Crowley in District 5. The Panthers are 15-4 on the year and 6-2 in league play.
Staying in boy’s basketball, in Division IV, the Sacred Heart Trojans will most definitely make the playoffs, as there are only 26 teams in that division. What the Trojans are hoping to do is improve on their No. 14 ranking and their 7-15 overall record.
The Basile Bearcats are currently No. 32 in the Class 1A power rankings. With only 33 teams competing in that classification, all the Bearcats have to do is stay ahead of the No. 33 spot by picking up a few more wins and improving on their overall record of 4-13.
Meanwhile, the Mamou Demons find themselves at No. 38 in Class 3A, six spots out of playoff contention. The Demons will have to improve on their overall record of 8-18 quickly in hopes of making it to the post-season.
In girl’s basketball the Pine Prairie Lady Panthers sit in the middle of the pack in District 5-3A with a league record of 5-5, but are No. 18 in the Class 3A rankings. The Lady Panthers are needing to improve on their 17-10 overall record down the stretch if they hope to get a top 16 seed and a home playoff game.
The Sacred Heart Lady Trojans find themselves in the same boat as Pine Prairie. With a 5-14 overall record, the Lady Trojans are ranked No. 18 in Division IV and would need to pick up power points with a few more wins to be able to host a first round contest.
Turning to Class 1A, the Basile Lady Bearcats find themselves at the No. 23 spot in the latest power rankings, thanks in part to their overall record of 14-13. The Lady Bearcats cannot win the district championship with only three wins, but can improve their position.
The Ville Platte Lady Bulldogs currently hold an overall record of 8-12 and are No. 25 in the Class 2A power rankings. Ville Platte has five games left in the season to gain power points.
Finally, the Mamou Lady Demons hold the No. 35 spot in Class 3A and would need to get some key wins down the stretch to make it into the top 32 teams. As of Tuesday, the Lady Demons were 7-15 on the season.
