Pine Prairie doubles up on Mamou in district action

PINE PRAIRIE -- Both the Pine Prairie Panthers and Lady Panthers came away with big wins, as they pounced their way to victory over the Mamou basketball squads in district action Monday night.
In the girl’s game, Pine Prairie jumped all over Mamou in the first quarter of play and rode that wave to a 41-21 victory.
With the win, the Lady Panthers move to 21-10 on the year and 4-5 in district play. The loss drops Mamou to 7-21 on the season and 0-9 in league competition.
In the boy’s contest, the Panthers and the Demons battled for all of the 32 minutes of the game, as Pine Prairie found a way to claim a 39-35 win.
The Panthers picked up their second win of the year and are now 2-25 on the season and 1-7 in District 5-3A. Mamou falls to 7-24 on the year and 2-5 in league play.
Here is a rundown of the two games played.

In what turned out to be a runaway contest, the Lady Panthers found themselves dishing out all of the offense in the first quarter of play. Mamou picked up the first point of the night on a free throw just 1:15 into the game.
From that point on, Pine Prairie ramped up the defensive effort and held the Lady Demons scoreless for the rest of the period. On offense, the Lady Panthers were able to string together five baskets over the course of the quarter to take an 11-1 lead.
Pine Prairie opened a 14-1 lead in the second quarter before Mamou could find the basket again. With the score at 14-4 and 3:49 left to play in the half, the Lady Panthers finished off the period on a 5-1 run to take a 19-5 lead into the locker room.
The Lady Demons came out ready to play in the third quarter as they tallied the first three points. However, Pine Prairie squelched the enthusiasm somewhat by knocking down the ensuing five points.
The final four points belonged to Mamou, putting the score at 24-12 in favor of the Lady Panthers heading into the final period.
As the fourth quarter began, it was clear that the Pine Prairie defense was just too much for the Lady Demons to handle. Pine Prairie continued to put pressure on Mamou, taking over the game and cruising to the 20 point win.
Kameron Allen led the Lady Panthers with 15 points.

Points came at a premium for both teams from the very first possession of the game. Each team found the going tough on the offensive end of the floor the entire first quarter, as the period ended in a 5-5 tie.
The second quarter was not much better in the scoring department. In fact the two teams combined for only eight total points, with six of those going to Pine Prairie. By the time the horn sounded to end the first half, the Panthers led the Demons 11-7.
The offenses for both squads began to show signs of life in the third quarter. Pine Prairie was able to widen their lead to seven, 18-11 half way through the period.
Mamou fought back, tying the game at 18-18 with 1:37 to go in the quarter. The Panthers knocked down the final basket of the period to own a 20-18 lead heading into the final quarter.
The final period proved to be the most exciting of the game. In that quarter, the lead changed hands six different times and was tied on three different occasions.
With 2:09 remaining, Pine Prairie held a 33-30 lead. However, the Demons tied the game back up at 35-35 at the 1:14 mark of the quarter. From there the Panthers managed to scored a bucket and hit two huge free throws with 13 seconds left on the clock to secure the win.
