IOTA -- Trying to take down the No. 1 team in Class 3A is no easy task.
And that proves true here Friday for the Pine Prairie Panthers, as they were held to 103 total yards and seven first downs in 38-0 loss to the Iota Bulldogs.
With the loss, Pine Prairie falls to 3-6 on the season and 2-4 in district play. The Panthers will host Crowley High Friday night in the last regular season game of the year.
Despite the loss, Pine Prairie fought hard the entire first quarter, only giving up one touchdown to the Bulldogs in the period. The only problem, that touchdown came 15 seconds into the game when quarterback Tyrone Charlot hit Mitchell Leger on a 58 yard pitch and catch.
The extra point was good, giving the Bulldogs the early 7-0 lead.
Iota’s offense could not get much going the rest of the opening quarter. It was not until the start of the second quarter that the Bulldogs were able to get on the board again.
On the first play of the period, St. Ed’s transfer Luke Doucet found the end zone from five yards out to put the Bulldogs up 14-0 after the extra point.
Iota finished the scoring in the first half at the 6:47 mark when Owen Daigle hit a 30 yard field goal, putting the Bulldogs on top 17-0.
Iota came out of the locker room still not in sync offensively. It was not until the 5:50 mark of the third quarter before Doucet broke free for a 51-yard touchdown run. The extra point was good, allowing Iota to extend the lead to 24-0.
Late in the period, Iota’s Dakota Breaux picked off a pass from Damon Malveaux and took it 25 yards to the house. An added extra point made it 31-0 in favor of the Bulldogs.
Iota tacked on their last score of the night in the final quarter, when Kollin Guillory took it in from six yards out.
