Both the Pine Prairie Panthers and the Mamou Demons came into District 5-3A competition this week with high hopes.
Unfortunately for both clubs, the first game of league play was not kind to either team as the Panthers were over run by the Church Point Bears 46-0 and the Demons let one slip away in a 14-6 loss to Port Barre.
Pine Prairie falls to 1-3 on the year and 0-1 in district play, while Mamou is now 0-4 on the season with the loss and 0-1 in league play.
Here is a rundown of those two games:

Pine Prairie vs.
Church Point
The scoring started from the opening kickoff and did not end until midway through the fourth quarter for the Bears as they rolled to the win.
Church Point’s Brelyn Jones took the first kickoff of the game and raced 70 yards for the score, putting the Bears up 6-0. The extra point pass failed, keeping the six point advantage with only 11 ticks gone off of the clock.
Church Point added their second score of the night just 1:22 seconds later when Tyrin McCade hauled in a 31 yard pass from Jones. Gavin Richard tacked on the two-point run and with 10:27 left to go in the first quarter, the Bears led 14-0.
Church Point collected a third touchdown in the period as Rodney Dupuis raced 40 yards for the score. The extra point pass failed once again, giving the Bears a commanding 20-0 lead with 5:20 to go in the first quarter.
The second quarter was a mirror image of the first, as Church Point extended their lead with three more touchdowns. Jones connected with Ian Meche for a 15 yard score, Tyrin McDade sprinted for 34 yards on the ground and Gavin Richard scooted in from 11 yards out to close out the scoring for the Bears in the first half.
When all was said and done, Church Point led 40-0 heading into the locker room.
The Bears finished off their scoring in the fourth quarter, as Andy Briceno blasted into the end zone from five yards out.
Pine Prairie running back JJ Sims did not produce much against a stingy Church Point defense, rushing the ball for only 10 yards on eight carries. The Panthers were held to 17 total yards the entire game, turning the ball over on three different occasions.

Mamou vs. Port Barre
A much improved Port Barre Red Devil team found the end zone twice and held on down the stretch to pick up the win over Mamou Friday night.
Port Barre scored their first touchdown of the night in the first quarter on a six-yard scoring strike. The extra point was no good, but the Red Devils owned a 6-0 lead early in the ball game.
Neither team could put up any points for the rest of the half. However, Port Barre did collect their second score of the night on a 76 yard touchdown run with 1:56 left to go in the third quarter. The two-point pass was good, giving the Red Devils a 14-0 lead.
Mamou finally got on the board for the first time this season midway through the fourth quarter when Daylon Ardoin strode in from seven yards out. The extra point failed, making the score 14-6 with 7:36 to go in the game.
Ardoin finished the night with 50 yards on 10 carries.
