Parish track athletes to compete at state meet starting today

BATON ROUGE -- Over the past week, the parish high schools sent some of their best track and field athletes to their respective regional meets hoping to not only bring home some team hardware, but to also qualify individuals for the state meet that begins today on the LSU campus.
Class B and C will have their meet today. Class 1A and 2A will compete tomorrow, while the Class 3A, 4A and 5A meet will take place on Saturday. Field events for Class 2A and 3A will start at 1:30 p.m. with the track events beginning at 5:00 p.m.
Unfortunately, none of the parish squads were able to take regional titles back to school. However, a number of individual athletes did make the grade and will compete at state.
Beginning in Class 2A, the Ville Platte High girl’s track and field team, coming off their recent district championship, sent a number of athletes to the Region II meet down in Lake Charles. As a team, the Lady Bulldogs were able to pick up enough points to place sixth out of 23 teams.
Individually, Ville Platte came away with two athletes that qualified to make their debut on Friday at LSU. Competing at state in three events will be Kaydan Coward.
The freshman athlete qualified for state in the 200M, High Jump and Long Jump. Coward placed second in the 200M at the regional meet with a time of 27.06 seconds. She also finished third in the high jump with a personal best of 5’0”. Coward finished second in the long jump with a distance of 17’.5”, which was also a personal best.
Along side Coward, Vondrayua Wilson also pick up a spot at state by placing third in the 400M. The eighth grader ran a personal best of 1:02.22.
The Ville Platte High boy’s also had two athletes make it to the state meet. Alex Soileau qualified in two events, the 1600M and the 3200M, while Trayvence Thomas qualified in the 400M.
Soileau, a senior placed third in both the 1600M and 3200M. Soileau ran a 4:39.57 in the 1600M and 10:14.05 in the 3200M, both personal bests.
Meanwhile, Thomas ran a personal best of 51.94 to reach state in the 400M.
In Class 1A, Sacred Heart’s Blaire Lafleur bested every other competitor at the regional meet, placing first in the javelin. Lafleur, a junior, threw a personal best of 117’9” to qualify for a spot at state tomorrow.
The Basile High Bearcats notched a place in the state meet when their 1600M Relay team took third place at their regional meet. The team ,consisting of Dawson Ashford, Cole Manuel, Logan Guillory and Keeman Ivory, ran a 3:40.80 and will try their best to take home a state title.

Girls: Carley Cloud- 9th, 100M Hurdles; Blaire Lafleur- 6th, High Jump, 9th, Long Jump and 9th, Triple Jump; Torie Fontenot- 9th, Long Jump; Torie Fontenot- 9th, Lond Jump; 400M Relay (Amanda Bergeron, Carley Cloud, Anna-Marie Parrott and Torie Fontenot)- 14th; 800M Relay (Amanda Bergeron, Ava Shiver, Torie Fontenot and Kaylee Johnson) - 14th.
Boys: Nick Perry- 9th, 200M; Tristan Soileau- 5th, 1600M; Michael Fontenot- 9th, 3200M; Evyn Soileau- 9th, 110M Hurdles; Devin Nelams- 10th, Discus; Sam Hollier- 12th, Javelin.

Mamou
Boys: Payton Vidrine- 8th, 100M and 7th, 200M; 400M Relay Bernard O’neail, Payton Vidrine, Leandre Harrison and Kyrian Green)- 11th; 800M Relay (Bernard O’neail, Payton Vidrine, Kyrian Green and Devin Papillion)- 10th.

Pine Prairie
Girls: Asia George- 4th, Triple Jump, 5th, 200M and 7th, Long Jump; Emily Vidrine- 6th, 1600M and 9th; 3200M.
