Parish teams find some success

Although the weather played havoc once again this week on the LHSAA baseball and softball schedule, mother nature was kind enough to allow games to be played on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.
On those two days, two of the parish’s diamond squads were able to come away with wins, while a third lost was a close game to a St. Landry parish squad.
In softball action, parish teams saw a mix of success, as one team collected their fourth win of the season while another fell hard to a district foe.
On Wednesday, Pine Prairie traveled to Deville to take on some inter-class competition in the form of Buckeye. The Panthers were able to put up a huge number in the second inning to subdue the Rapides parish club 8-6.
On Thursday, Sacred Heart hosted the Opelousas Tigers in hopes of securing another non-district win. The Trojans did just that and more, as they broke out the big boy bats in a 20-0 blasting of the Tigers.
Finally, on Thursday, the Mamou Demons belted out 12 hits and rallied late in the game, but could not finish off the St. Edmund Blue Jays in an 8-6 loss on the road in Eunice.
Thursday’s action on the softball diamond saw the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans slip past the Marksville Lady Tigers 2-1 and the Ville Platte Lady Bulldogs fall hard to Iota 11-0.
Here is a rundown of those games played.

Pine Prairie
vs. Buckeye (B)
Pine Prairie jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Elijah George singled and later scored on an error. Buckeye answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take over the lead.
However, the Panthers busted loose in the top of the second for seven huge runs to go up 8-2. Buckeye tried to comeback, scoring three in the fifth and one in the sixth, but Pine Prairie was able to fend off the Rapides parish Panthers to claim the win.
Pine Prairie moves to 3-8 on the year with the victory.

Sacred Heart
vs. Opelousas (B)
Sacred Heart left no doubt who the dominate team was from the start, as they batted around twice and plated 14 runs in the first inning in the runaway win.
The Trojans collected the rest of their six runs in the top of the fourth and four pitchers combined for a no-hitter.
Sacred Heart improves to 6-4-1 on the season with the win.

Mamou vs. St. Ed’s (B)
After holding Mamou scoreless in the top of the first inning, St. Edmund found enough offense to pick up two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
The Demons cut the lead in half in the top of the second when Tanner Atchinson singled, moved to third on a double by Devin Boone and scored on a sacrifice fly from Matthew Fontenot.
The two team checked each other up in the third inning, with both clubs putting up three runs apiece.
The Blue Jays extended their advantage in the bottom of the fourth by plating two more runs. Mamou recovered those runs in the top of the sixth with two runs of their own.
St. Ed’s closed out the game with a solo run in the bottom half of that same inning.
Mamou fell to 2-3 on the year with the loss.
Sacred Heart
vs. Marksville (SB)
The contest between the Lady Trojans and the Lady Tigers turned out to be a pitchers’ duel over the first four innings of play as neither team could put points on the board.
Marksville picked up their only run in the top of the fifth, giving them the first lead of the game.
Sacred Heart captured the lead and the game in the bottom of the sixth when Blair Lafleur and Olivia Hernandez both scored.
The Lady Trojans improve to 4-4 on the year.

Ville Platte
vs. Iota (SB)
Ville Platte fell to 2-2 on the season and 0-1 in District 5-3A, as they could not plate a run against Iota despite gathering six hits in the game.
Hannah Monier took the loss in the circle.
