Despite the rain and thunderstorms that rushed through here on Wednesday, three of the four parish softball teams were able to get in early week games on Monday and Tuesday.
Those games produced a mix bag of results, as the Mamou Lady Demons and the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans each picked up wins, while the Pine Prairie Lady Panthers suffered a tough loss. The Lady Trojans also picked up a loss on Tuesday afternoon to go 1-1 in that two day stretch.
Here is a rundown of those games played.
Sacred Heart
vs. Crowley
On Monday, the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans traveled to Crowley with the hopes of picking up their third win of the season. The Lady Trojans did not disappoint as they blasted the Ladies of Crowley for 20 hits in a 16-4 win.
With the win, Sacred Heart improved to 3-3 on the season.
The Lady Trojans got the jump on Crowley in the top of the first when Tobie Landry singled and later scored on an Olivia Hernandez single. The Ladies tied the game up in the bottom half of the inning with a single run of their own.
Sacred Heart’s biggest inning came in the top of the second when the Lady Trojans blew the game open with five unanswered runs. Doubles by Maci Vidrine, Camille Soileau and Landry provided the firepower in that inning.
The Lady Trojans continued to add to their lead in the next three at bats, scoring a single run in the third and two runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings. Sacred Heart capped the game off with four runs in the seventh, while holding Crowley to solo runs in the latter three innings.
Mamou vs. Iowa
Also on Monday, Mamou improved their overall record to 2-3 on the season with a walk-off single from Dacia Richard in the bottom of the seventh that gave the Lady Demons a close 10-9 win over the Iowa Lady Jackets.
After blanking Iowa in the top of the first, Mamou notched the initial runs of the game in the bottom half of the inning. Madison Fontenot doubled with one out and came home on a two-out home run off of the bat of Taylor Douget to make it a 2-0 game.
The Lady Demons pushed their lead to 4-0, scoring single runs in the bottom of the second and third innings. Iowa cut that advantage in half in the top of the fourth with two runs of their own.
In the top of the fifth, the Lady Jackets put six runs on the board to take the lead for the first time in the game. Mamou responded with two runs in the bottom part of the inning to make it an 8-6 game.
Both teams picked up runs in the sixth, setting up a final push for the Lady Demons in the seventh inning. Down by two, Mamou’s Teralyn Fontenot and Sydney Bruney singled and scored on a triple by Angel Menier. Two batters later, Richard singled home Menier for the win.
Pine Prairie
vs. Buckeye
In a hard fought game on Monday, the Pine Prairie Lady Panthers mounted a valiant late inning comeback that fell just short in a 9-7 loss to Buckeye.
With the misstep Pine Prairie falls to 4-1 on the season.
The game started with a bang as both teams were able to put up two runs each in the first inning. Buckeye took control in their next two at bats, scoring single runs in both plate appearances.
The Lady Panthers got back on the board in the bottom of the third when Kailey Soileau singled and later scored on a single from Kaitlin Robinson.
Neither team could push runs across in the fourth and fifth innings. Buckeye got things going again in the top of the sixth as they notched four more runs.
After allowing another run to Buckeye in the top of the seventh, Pine Prairie mounted their last charge in the bottom half of the inning. Trailing by six, the Lady Panthers pushed four runs across in their final at bat, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Sacred Heart
vs. Menard
Tuesday afternoon, the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans hosted the Menard Lady Eagles in a re-match from a game played earlier this season.
Unfortunately for the Lady Trojans, Menard was up to the task once more as they ran past Sacred Heart 20-3.
The loss dropped the Lady Trojans to 3-4 on the young season.
Menard ran out to a 5-1 lead after one inning of play and a 7-3 advantage at the end of the second inning. The Lady Eagles then added 13 runs over the next two at bats.
