Parish athletes put on good show at state track meet

BATON ROUGE -- Evangeline Parish was well represented at the LHSAA State Track and Field meet held at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium this past weekend and those athletes that came to compete showed that track and field is alive and well in the area.
Starting in Class 2A, Ville Platte led the way with four athletes participating in seven total events, with freshman Kayden Coward taking part in three of those events.
Coward, making her state track debut, placed fourth in the 200M running with a personal best of 26.32 seconds. Coward also placed seventh in the high jump with a height of 4’10”. She placed eighth in the long jump with a distance of 15’3.25”.
Senior Alex Soileau earned the right to compete in two races, the 1600M and the 3200M. Soileau took third place in both events, setting personal records for each race. The senior distance runner clocked in at 4:31.06 for the 1600M and 10:06.43 in the 3200M.
Senior Trayvence Thomas scored points for the Bulldogs by taking fourth place in the 400M. Thomas clock in at 51.34 seconds, a personal record.
Finally, Vondrayua Wilson also notched some points for the Lady Bulldogs by taking sixth place in the 400M. The eighth grader finished in 1:03.46.
In Class 1A, Sacred Heart’s Blaire Lafleur was the lone participant for the Lady Trojans. Lafleur held tough with a throw of 109’10” in the javelin to place fifth overall.
The Basile High Bearcats had two individual participants and a relay team competing at the state meet. The biggest winner for the Bearcats was Travis Mondares who jumped to a personal record of 6’2’’ in the high jump. That height was good enough to give him third place overall.
Competing in that same event, Keeman Ivory finished in eighth place with a jump of 5’10”.
The Basile High 1600M relay team consisting of Dawson Ashford, Cole Manuel, Logan Guillory and Keeman Ivory also found some points as they placed eighth with a time of 3:41.96 seconds.
As a team, the Ville Platte Bulldogs placed 11th out of a field of 40 teams.
